How do fictional worlds help us understand grief? At #PALA2025, I’m presenting on A Monster Calls, using Text World Theory & Responsive Bibliotherapy to show how style and structure depict grief and how readers respond emotionally @SHU_Stylistics @2025PALA @PoeticsLinguist
Found this abandoned playing card on my driveway & thought of Graham Rawle. After reading The Card, I’d email Graham when I found cards (apparently other people did too) & he’d respond with a witty reply about what it meant! Such a lovely man and talented creative. Still missed.
Attended this today and it was brilliant. A masterclass in how to tell personal narratives alongside academic research!
My inaugural lecture,

Really enjoyed hearing @RichardAyoade talking about The Unfinished Harauld Hughes at @otsfestival this evening. He described it as a mockumentary but I’m wondering if (& hoping) it can be classed as autofiction. Leaving with a signed copy so I’m looking forward to finding out!
Ok, I need this in my life.

Devastated to learn about the recent passing of Graham Rawle. As a person, he was as brilliant, witty and kind as his work. So sad.

My university is officially transitioning from Zoom to Teams and this makes me very sad. I like Zoom so much better!
