"A lot of what needs to be done, both by the oversight board and Meta, is weigh where we are most willing to allow the errors to fall. We want to err on the side of more inclusivity of speech."

I am honored to join the @Meta's @Oversightboard, the international body that makes content moderation decisions on @facebook and @instagram.
Today, we are announcing the appointment of a new Board Member from the United States, @kenji_yoshino.
Kenji brings with him knowledge and experience that will enrich our work, deepen our analysis, and help us improve how Meta treats people and communities around the world.

Today Meta made an important announcement stemming from a case we reviewed about whether or not the company was correct in its decision in 2021 to restrict then-President Trump from their platforms.
Our response to Meta's announcement is below.

In response to a recent Board recommendation about the phrase “death to Khamenei” ("marg bar Khamenei"), Meta announced that it will allow the phrase in the context of the ongoing protests in Iran.
We are glad to see Meta fully implement our recommendation ASAP in this case.

To what extent could the civil service be going on a big hiring spree of laid off big tech talent?
Given that CS is less sensitive to business cycle fluctuations, there is surely a big opportunity to go shopping for much needed technical/emerging sector expertise
Loads of replies from government agencies looking for tech talent. It’s a salary cut for sure, but the world needs brilliant tech brains in public service.

I'm very proud of what the Board has accomplished in its first three years, and I look forward to its future achievements. Onward for me, but the OSB is in excellent hands.
Jamal Greene has decided to step down as a member of the Oversight Board effective December 31, 2022. We’re grateful for his work in standing up the Board and helping to run it as a founding co-chair.

ALT Quote card with a grey background and some text saying: "Since the Board’s inception, Jamal’s leadership as a Board co-chair has been fundamental to our success in holding Meta accountable and protecting users’ rights. We thank Jamal for all he has done to help us establish the Board and advance our mission. We wish him the very best. — Oversight Board Co-Chairs"

"this latest opinion from the Oversight Board showcases its potential to bring real reform and accountability to the platform. In an age when speech platforms are behaving lawlessly, this couldn’t be more welcome."

Really happy with this piece I wrote for @TheAtlantic on the @OversightBoard's recent cross-check decision and why it's smart, significant, and sending good signals for developing separations within platforms
