The Trust is delighted to announce that Normandy Veteran Richard Brock has been appointed Memorial Ambassador! He is pictured at events in Preston's Lancashire Infantry Museum earlier this week where he shared his story with young people and was interviewed by our Youth Ambassador, Alexander Churchill. Richard, aged 102, served with the 1st Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. Richard sailed aboard the Ocean Vigil and landed in Normandy on 8 June 1944, amid naval bombardment and German artillery fire. He went on to operate a Universal Carrier during the campaign through north-west Europe, including the Battle of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, the liberation of Holland and the crossing of the Rhine. Of his appointment as Ambassador he said: "I am proud and humbled to accept the position of Ambassador for the British Normandy Memorial. Over the past four years I have been flying the flag for all the men and women who didn't make it back home. Also for my dear pals of my company of 130 lads who landed with me on Gold Beach. After nearly a year of bitter fighting, travelling over 2,000 miles, only 19 made it back. I am the last one alive today. They are always in my thoughts. I have always said that they are the heroes and I am honoured to carry on their memory." ❤️ 📷 Florence Marsac / British Normandy Memorial

We celebrated this year’s National Engineering Day with a special visit from the Right Honourable Lord Montgomery of Alamein and Sergeant Richard Brock, East Lancashire Regiment who is one of the last D Day veterans alive in the Northwest. Following the D Day beach landings, Richard Brock drove and commanded a Universal Carrier throughout Europe - the ubiquitous infantry support vehicle which performed the same role that BOXER does today it is fitting that he should visit KNDS UK where every BOXER made in the UK for the British Army starts its life. As a special surprise, the two vehicles were unveiled side by side for the first time and a delighted 102 year old Richard got to drive the Universal Carrier once more.   In the ceremony of Remembrance, Nicholas Witchell delivered a moving address on the British Normandy Memorial which he helped establish as founder and managing trustee of the Normandy Memorial Trust. The KNDS Fairey Band performed The Last Post and Reveille and a moving two minutes’ silence was observed.   With over 100 years of engineering excellence from the site that was originally National Aircraft Factory Number Two, KNDS UK continues to lead the way in defence manufacturing, producing rapidly deployable tactical military bridges to customers around the world and supporting the British Army with its BOXER armoured vehicle programme.

We are so saddened to learn of the death of our great friend, Henry Rice, who has died aged 100. Normandy Veteran Henry was a Signalman serving on HMS Eastway, which was a Landing Ship used to supply men and equipment to the various beaches. HMS Eastway arrived off Juno Beach on D-Day +5. Henry was one of the first Veterans to visit the Memorial after its completion in October 2021, and has visited every year since thanks to our partners Spirit of Normandy Trust. His passion for remembrance was truly humbling. We will miss Henry so very, very much. His beaming smile, infectious warmth and wonderful zest for life brought such joy to everyone fortunate enough to know him. We send our deepest condolences to the Rice family and all Henry's friends. Rest in Peace, dear Henry. ❤️ 📷 This is Henry at the Memorial a few months ago for the 82nd anniversary commemorations. Credit - Florence Marsac / British Normandy Memorial

Our Memorial Ambassador, 101-year-old D-Day Veteran Ken Cooke, has released a book about his life! 📚 'Every Day Is An Adventure' was written by close family friends Amanda Stirk and Gillian MacDonald. Their work started from a conversation the two friends had with Ken whilst he was gardening at home one day earlier this year. Gillian said: "We were saying he'd had such an interesting life that someone should write a book about it. It just evolved from there - initially it was going to be a small undertaking, but it grew and grew." The book costs £10 + pp and can be ordered by contacting Gillian - [email protected] Congratulations, Ken! 📚❤️

Incredibly sad to hear this. I had the luck and pleasure of meeting Ken a few times at #DDay events, and we shared stories, laughter and a few tears. Thinking of his family and friends today. Rest in Peace, “Grandad Ken”.
We are deeply saddened to learn that Ken Hay passed away today, Sunday 20th September, aged 101. Ken was a Normandy Veteran and a long-standing Memorial Ambassador who gave everything to support the Trust's work in sharing the message of Remembrance with the next generation. He attended the 82nd commemorations this June and participated in the ceremony, as he did in previous years. His passion for education was unwavering. The countless schoolchildren whose lives he touched with his stories of courage and resilience nicknamed him 'Grandad Ken'. We extend our most sincere condolences to Ken's sons Chris and Jeremy, all the Hay family and his very many friends. Ken Hay MBE Leg d'Hon. An extraordinary gentleman whose remarkable life will never be forgotten. ❤️ Rest in Peace our dearest friend. 📷 Crown Copyright

Goodbye, Giants. ❤️ Today is the last day of the Standing with Giants installation at the British Normandy Memorial. The installation will return to the UK for essential maintenance and repair. Standing with Giants, which is a separate registered charity, will also have the opportunity to display the installation at other locations across the UK during the winter months. We hope to welcome the Giants back to Normandy in spring 2027. However, their return will depend upon securing sufficient funding: britishnormandymemorial.org/…

We are deeply saddened to share that D-Day Veteran Donald Howkins has passed away aged 105. From Buckingham, Donald served as a gunner in the Middlesex Regiment and helped waterproof vehicles and ammunition for the Normandy invasion before landing on Gold Beach. Donald was one of the Memorial's earliest supporters nearly a decade ago, and one of the first Guardians. He also became one of the first Veterans to visit the site of the Memorial following the inauguration of the site in June 2019, and later when the Memorial was built. We will forever remember his support and kindness, and graciousness in sharing his story with us - a legacy that will live on. Rest in Peace, dearest Donald. We will never forget you. ❤️
