If you missed @buildcanada’s recent Ottawa meetup, here’s a quick recap of the talk. @notnotaspy, founder and CEO of @fieldeffectsoft, talked about why cybersecurity can't be an afterthought, especially right now with AI. He said a lot of the new AI companies are skipping the security basics, and then they get surprised when it hits them because they've never had to deal with it in the first place. Keep in mind that this is coming from someone who has spent over 25 years in security. On building in Canada, he pointed out that Canada has plenty of companies that might not be household names but are big, full of smart people, and doing the real work. You don't need to be big and famous to build something meaningful. That comes after.

Last night, Build Canada hosted our third Ottawa Reception. 150+ entrepreneurs and policymakers from our community made it out! Of course, a big thank you to our special guest of the evening @notnotaspy 🇨🇦

Got the Build Canada community together in Ottawa last night to talk cybersecurity and AI with @notnotaspy from @fieldeffectsoft. Matt is hands down one of the world's experts on this stuff - we're lucky he's building here.

Last week, the federal government released a draft of its new stablecoin rules. Issuers can pay rewards for using a coin, but not yield for holding one.

Last year, @SomSeif shared why the Bank of Canada should regulate stablecoins and set reserve and redemption rules. "Without a stablecoin framework, Canada will lose economic influence to foreign stablecoin issuers, increase reliance on USD-pegged assets, and forfeit economic sovereignty." Progress over politics 🇨🇦🏗️
A former NDP Premier, a former BC Liberal Premier & former CPC Leader walk into a bar… and drink coffee and talk about national security & the economy for hours. Thanks to the Canadian Ditchley conference for good conversations about building a strong 🇨🇦.

October was a busy month for Canadian democracy. Here’s a look back at four races that reshaped the political map.

Today’s @bankofcanada hike was largely expected by analysts and follows the @federalreserve’s 0.25% hike from last month. 📈 But spectators are divided on whether it’s a preventative move against inflation, or an unnecessary strain on businesses already squeezed by fuel prices.

For now, Canadians can expect: - Payments on variable rate mortgages to rise at varying levels depending on years remaining and size - A bump in the value of the Canadian dollar - A rise in high-interest savings account and GIC rates

What is Build Canada, anyway? It's a great question -- I dove in with Paul Wells to unpack it all.

Elections can be costly. Literally. 💸 And they’re getting (understandably) more expensive as time goes on. Here are the most expensive Canadian elections of the last 10 years (plus tonight’s Toronto election). 🗳️

In British Columbia's provincial election, voter turnout fell sharply. Pending the counting of mail-in ballots, turnout was down by at least 5 points in every riding.

In 2024, ballots counted after election night, mostly mail-in, added roughly 1.8 percentage points. Mail-in ballots for 2026 are counted Nov. 6, but they’re unlikely to change the fact that turnout fell in every riding. The smallest drop was 5.2 points, in Cariboo-Chilcotin.

All in all, this latest investment push for some of Canada's most promising startups sounds good. But stacked up against our peers, it's not as huge as it sounds.
🇨🇦 just launched a $1.75B VC push via BDC. Split across 2 programs & 5 streams, it's been years in the making (and is likely still a few from actual investment). Funds will flow through private fund managers, & only the $700M fund-of-funds stream is open for applications. 🧵

In 2025, Canada had only 1.2 IPOs per 10M people. Among the G7, Canada accounted for just 1.5% of IPOs in 2025.
It’s true. Canada is facing an IPO drought.
