We’re proud to announce a $100 million investment to give people a stronger voice in local democracy, one of the largest investments in civic tech to date. Most of the decisions that shape our lives are made there, yet only 15% of Americans believe elected officials care what they think. People across the political spectrum come to Change.org to weigh in on those decisions. This investment is about making sure they're heard. Micah Reed opened his LADWP bill and found a charge of $3,322 for two months, more than $2,100 of it for electricity. He says his family kept the thermostat at 74 degrees through the Valley's triple-digit heat. On Oct. 1, he started a petition calling for an independent audit and summer rate relief. More than 42,000 people have signed, and Reed delivered nearly 40,000 signatures to the LADWP Board of Water and Power Commissioners, joined by other residents who shared their own bills. Should special education classrooms have cameras? After a classroom aide raised concerns about her daughter’s suspected mistreatment by a teacher, petition starter Ashley Hopwood says the only incident that could be verified happened on a playground where there were cameras. Hopwood, whose children are nonspeaking, is calling for cameras in self-contained special education classrooms across California. Over 26,000 people have signed her petition. She argues that cameras could help protect students who cannot tell their families when something is wrong, with safeguards for students’ and staff members’ privacy. (Content warning: Sexual assault) Cornell’s Students Against the Sexual Solicitation of Youth (SASSY) is petitioning New York lawmakers to close what advocates call the “voluntary intoxication” loophole. State law recognizes that someone who is unconscious or physically helpless cannot consent, even if they chose to drink. It also covers mental incapacitation caused by substances administered without consent. But when someone voluntarily drinks or uses drugs and remains conscious, being too intoxicated to consent may not meet the law’s standard. The petition urges the State Assembly to pass A.101, covering cases where someone knew or should have known the other person was too intoxicated to consent. A petition is calling on the Bureau of Land Management to investigate the deaths of three cremello wild horses euthanized during a roundup in Wyoming's Red Desert on Oct. 19. The BLM says all three, a 2-year-old mare and two foals, were completely blind and did not react to movement toward their eyes, and that the decision was based on eyesight, not coat color. The petition argues a quick reflex test on frightened young horses is not a diagnosis. The roundup is one of many across the West. The BLM estimates more than 85,000 wild horses and burros live on public land, more than three times what it says the land can support, and it says removals prevent starvation and protect the range. The petition asks the agency to require a licensed veterinarian to examine any horse before it is euthanized for blindness. Petition link: c.org/fVDzNJrx #wildhorses #animalrights #animals

Should lessons on communism and socialism be required in schools? @DrienaSixto says her father was a political prisoner in communist Cuba before her family fled to the United States. More than 5,500 people have signed her petition urging Congress to require schools receiving federal K-12 funding to teach the history and human cost of communist and socialist regimes, including firsthand survivor accounts. She also wants the Library of Congress to establish a project preserving those testimonies for students, teachers and families. Click below to read or sign. change.org/p/make-teaching-t…

More than 7,000 people have signed a petition calling on Netflix to replace Greta Gerwig as director of future Narnia films, arguing that her adaptation risks departing from C.S. Lewis’s original vision and Christian themes. The petition’s starter objects to Meryl Streep voicing Aslan, the lion who represents Christ. But he says his concerns extend beyond casting to changes in the setting and musical choices, which he argues convey a different theology from Lewis’s work. Gerwig has described herself as a lifelong fan of the books and says she reread Lewis’s work while preparing for the film. “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew” opens in theaters in February 2027. On August 30, police in Cedartown, Georgia, shot and killed HeeHaw, a 1-year-old miniature donkey, in his owner’s pasture while searching the property for a missing child. According to a petition, the officer used a taser before firing his gun. Bodycam footage was released on October 9, but other evidence still hasn’t been made public. The officer is on administrative leave, and no charges have been filed. HeeHaw’s owner, Hannah Israel, has filed a federal civil-rights lawsuit. The petition asks for the remaining evidence to be released, a Justice Department review of the shooting, and stronger federal oversight when police kill pets and farm animals. Starting Nov. 20, Airbnb hosts can no longer require guests to wash and put away dishes, strip beds or take trash off the property. Airbnb says guests who pay a cleaning fee shouldn’t also be handed a list of chores. Some hosts say the new rules go too far. A petition is asking Airbnb to let hosts require guests to wash the dishes they use and put their trash in the bins provided, as long as those rules are clear before booking. It also calls on Airbnb to consult hosts before making changes like this. Petition link: c.org/6hMQDcwy #Airbnb #travel #vacationrental

The City Council passed Romanch’s Law, which will: Stop the city from issuing new horse-drawn carriage licenses. Create a transition program to help carriage drivers and other affected workers find new jobs. End horse-drawn carriage rides on June 1, 2028. The bill is named for Romanch Mahajan, an 18-year-old tourist who died after being thrown from a runaway carriage in Central Park in June. The vote follows decades of advocacy over animal welfare and public safety. A change.org petition signed by thousands of people was among the many calls to end the practice. The drivers’ union has opposed the bill, arguing its worker protections are insufficient. The legislation now goes to the mayor for action. #NYC #horses Click below to read or sign. change.org/p/it-s-2026-horse… Change.org

(Content warning: child death) In October 1994, the country spent nine days searching for 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander Smith after their mother, Susan Smith, told investigators a stranger had taken her car with the boys inside. She later confessed to driving the car into John D. Long Lake with her sons strapped in their seats. She was convicted of murder in 1995 and sentenced to life with the possibility of parole. Smith was denied parole at her first hearing in 2024 and can now be reconsidered every two years. Ahead of her next hearing on Nov. 19, a petition with nearly 9,000 signatures is urging the South Carolina parole board to keep her in prison. The boys' father, David Smith, has publicly opposed her release. The petition says it is not affiliated with him or his family. Petition link: c.org/zsFtdqZ8 #SusanSmith #SouthCarolina #TrueCrime

Should Airbnb guests have to wash their own dishes? Somer Adkins, a supporter of a Change.org petition challenging Airbnb’s new limits on guest chores, shares her perspective in this video. Starting Nov. 20, Airbnb will generally bar hosts from asking guests to wash and put away dishes, strip beds or take trash off-site. The company says tasks requiring significant time or effort, or typically handled by a cleaner, shouldn’t fall to guests. The petition supports limits on excessive cleaning demands but argues that washing used dishes and putting trash in designated bins are reasonable responsibilities. It calls on Airbnb to preserve those expectations and consult hosts before making changes. Where would you draw the line on checkout chores? Petition link: c.org/ddZXMYPp #Airbnb #Travel

On what would have been Stephanie Minter’s 42nd birthday, her mother is sharing her story. Stephanie was fatally stabbed at a bus shelter in Fairfax County, Virginia, in February. Her mother, Cheryl, started a Change.org petition calling for the removal of Fairfax County prosecutor Steve Descano. She argues that his office’s handling of prior charges against the man accused of killing Stephanie left him free to commit the attack. You can read her petition at c.org/q5QTH62t In an op-ed published today in The Daily Wire, Cheryl writes about her daughter and explains what she’s asking officials to do: dailywire.com/news/an-illega…

Six-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer were killed when a pickup truck drove onto a soccer field during a youth game at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas, on Oct. 17. Ten others were injured, including five children, according to police. The 34-year-old driver was released without charges after police said they did not have probable cause to arrest her. She is cooperating with investigators, who are still determining what caused the crash. No final decision has been made about criminal charges. Brandon Swart, whose son plays at the complex, started a petition calling for bollards, protective posts designed to block vehicle access, around the fields. He is also requesting an independent safety review and a publicly available plan for permanent protection. Click below to read or sign. A 2-year-old put a loaded gun in their mouth at Thrive Learning Center East in Richmond, Virginia, after taking it from administrator Martha Evans’ unzipped fanny pack, according to state records obtained by WTVR. Staff intervened after about 15 seconds. Staff told investigators Evans regularly brought the loaded gun to daycare, calling it a “normal routine.” The Sept. 25 incident went unreported to regulators for four days, despite a 24-hour deadline. Evans faces firearm charges. A petition calls for suspending the center’s license, penalties for reporting failures and enforcement of firearm safety rules. The daycare has been closed since Oct. 1, and the state intends to permanently suspend its license, though administrative proceedings are still underway. #Virginia #Guns #children Click below to read or sign. change.org/p/suspend-thrive-…

The NFL Players Association is calling for a full investigation into the Philadelphia Eagles’ handling of Jalen Hurts’ blood clots. Hurts played against Jacksonville in London on Oct. 11 after doctors diagnosed a superficial blood clot in his calf and cleared him to play. After he returned to the U.S., further testing revealed deep vein thrombosis and blood clots in both lungs. He is now taking blood thinners and cannot play during treatment. The NFL has defended the Eagles’ handling of Hurts’ condition. But the players’ union says it is unaware of any league investigation and is calling for a full review before conclusions are drawn. Eagles fan Max S. started a petition calling for an independent review of Hurts’ medical clearance and the decisions surrounding his participation in London. It also asks the NFL and Eagles to examine international travel protocols and publicly share findings while protecting his medical privacy. Petition link in the replies. #JalenHurts #Eagles
