John Healey’s positioning of HP sauce is an in-joke. He carries a bottle wherever he goes overseas as I have recounted twice in my Peterborough diary in The Daily Telegraph. Eg last month… HP what? Is Chancellor John Healey now regretting flying back early from the G20 finance ministers’ summit in North Carolina for Andy Burnham's first appearance as PM in the Commons? Healey took his trusty bottle of HP sauce with him, as he always does on his travels, and was allowed to keep the bottle with him on the flight, even though it was more than 100ml, as he flew there by UK Government jet. But on the way back, he had to fly commercial and US Border staff confiscated the mysterious brown sauce. Perhaps there should be a HP sauce carve-out in the next round of trade talks? telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/09…

NEW There is some confusion over Andy Burnham's position on Brexit Earlier this morning: Reporter asks: "Will you allow the UK to join the EU freedom of movement without a referendum?" Andy Burnham says: "No. And I wasn't saying that", adding that he would "never move ahead of the British public when it comes to Brexit". 11.30am Lobby briefing: Number 10 will now not say whether the British public will get a referendum on rejoining EU freedom of movement. A spokesman says: "The process will be set out in due course ... He wants to have an open debate about this.... there are no options on the table." What do you think? More now on @GBNEWS.

Andy Burnham first discussed his theory that EU immigration might be less permanent than post-Brexit immigration (and so perhaps better for the UK) in his interview with me on @GBNEWS last month. CH: You said immigration controls weaken Brexit, but Brexit gives you the power to control legal migration. Boris Johnson ignored that. The Boris wave happened. He was punished at the polls. Brexit gives you the power you want to be a sovereign nation. PM: One thing that I want to convey here is Brexit has changed the nature of immigration to this country, because in the past, when we were in the European Union, people can have their view about it, about whether it was good or bad. But what we had was a more revolving door form of migration, where people would come here in their younger years. Many people did from Eastern Europe. People would remember, and they'd maybe spend you know a few years here in their mid to late 20s, and then go home and start a family, and that was a very common form of immigration. Now, immigration is more likely to be a permanent settlement, where people are coming on a visa to work here. And then we saw obviously the Boris wave and the changes that came through in that in that period. So it's changed the nature of immigration.

GB News developing new sitcom. TITLE: THE ALAN RUSBRIDGERS PITCH: In a dystopian, parallel universe entirely populated by identical clones of former Guardian editor Alan Rusbridger, society grinds to a halt as every single citizen competes to be the most pompous, high-minded intellectual while shuttering anything fun, popular, or working-class that they personally dislike.
