ALT Runners, walkers, cancer survivors, family and friends raised approximately $255,000 this year for ovarian cancer research/clinical trials at the 24th Annual Gail Parkins Ovarian Cancer Walk & 5K (according to organizer Melanie Bacheler, based on the latest tally). Funds support Duke Cancer Institute programs and studies. In addition to the walk and run, an annual educational forum takes place. This year, gynecologic oncologist Angeles Alvarez Secord, MD, presented captivating information on the topic of Ovarian Cancer — Novel Therapies: Today and Tomorrow. Dr. Secord is director of gynecologic oncology clinical trials at Duke Cancer Institute. Kudos to Duke Obstetrics & Gynecology 5K runners who placed among the top finishers! Team co-captain and Duke Health resident Katie Penvose, MD, placed second (females overall category). Gynecologic oncology fellowship alumnus Ben Albright, MD, MS, and faculty Laura Havrilesky, MD, MHSc, placed first in their age categories.
