For the new Truth Hurts, I spoke to Dâm-Funk about playing keyboards on Westside Connection's "Let It Rain," collaborating with Snoop on 7 Days of Funk, his vision for modern funk, the influence of Prince and Junie Morrison, the origins of the Funkmosphere parties, funk's re-emergence in contemporary pop, and why staying true to the music has always mattered more to him than chasing fame. One of my favorite episodes we've done. youtube.com/watch?v=F8BLEL6Y… @DaMFunK

NAME THAT FAVORITE TRACK! On this day in 1979, Prince released his 2nd album, the self titled Prince. The album produced five singles, I Wanna Be Your Lover, Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?, Still Waiting, Sexy Dancer, and Bambi. Initially, I Wanna Be Your Lover and I Feel For You were written for Patrice Rushen who was working on her own album at the time. She declined the songs. Although years later, Chaka Khan would record I Feel For You to great chart success. The album is Prince on all vocals and instruments although Prince did acknowledge that Andre Cymone provided background vocals on Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad. Additionally, Andre and Bobby Z were credited as "heaven sent helpers" in the credits leaving many to wonder if there were more uncredited contributions. NAME that track! I'll go first. SO many great songs here, but something about When We're Dancing Close And Slow that is super haunting. Very cool chord structures. But this album is fire front to back. I Wanna Be Your Lover (5:47) Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad? (3:49) Sexy Dancer (4:18) When We’re Dancing Close And Slow (5:18) With You (3:59) Bambi (4:22) Still Waiting (4:14) I Feel For You (3:24) It’s Gonna Be Lonely (5:26)

On the 50-year anniversary of Spirit, we say rest in peace to Charles Stepney—the man who helped bring the Earth, Wind & Fire sound together. Stepney was essential to the Chicago recording industry through Chess Records. He worked with The Dells, helped produce Minnie Riperton’s first project and Rotary Connection, and brought his genius to Earth, Wind & Fire. He helped assemble the Phenix Horns, rounded out the string arrangements and gave a young band clear musical direction as it grew into one of the greatest groups ever assembled. Charles Stepney never lived to hear Spirit released. But his spirit is all over that masterpiece. Let’s keep the masters’ memory alive. Rest well, Charles Stepney.

Drums aren't all African! While Africa has its unique percussion, the modern drum set is distinctly American. From hi-hats to backbeats, its techniques and philosophy are unique. #MusicHistory #AmericanMusic
