Today marks the anniversary of the coronation of Elizabeth I in 1559 at Westminster Abbey. Elizabeth chose never to marry, despite pressure to produce an heir to continue the Tudor line. She famously became known as the Virgin Queen and ruled for 45 years.

In Tudor times today would have been known as 'Plough Monday', the first Monday after 6th January. The day when things would return to normal and people would go back to work after the twelve days of Christmas.

It was previously believed that Thomas Boleyn added the Long Gallery, but research has revealed that it was actually Anne of Cleves’ vision. Anne added the Staircase Gallery on the floor below, connecting the two wings of the house & the Entrance Hall.

#OnThisDay in 1536 Catherine of Aragon died. For seven years the Pope refused to annul her marriage to Henry VIII. Catherine was forced to leave the court and spent the rest of her life living in far reduced circumstances until her death.
On this day in 1540, Henry VIII and Anne of Cleves were married at the Royal Palace of Placentia in Greenwich. Henry was very vocal about how unhappy he was about the marriage; he had only met Anne in person 5 days beforehand and felt she differed greatly from her portrait.
