Zucman is right. Really disappointed in Tyler Cowen because of this. He normally has (much) higher epistemic standards. See also: xitter.gq/jasonfurman/status/211…
Replying to @gabriel_zucman
The AI-generated “audit” of our scientific output, published by Tyler Cowen, has no merit. It is a grotesque use of artificial intelligence and a travesty.
Anyone who has used AI knows that if you prompt an AI to find “errors” in a paper, it will oblige.
Without an expert review of the output, this exercise is meaningless. You are insulting the intelligence of your readers. xitter.gq/MargRev/status/2115518…

But not everything is for sale in a democracy.
This should be a wake-up call for democratic forces all over the world.
It is not for billionaires to decide if billionaires should pay tax.
It should never be for oligarchs to decide what is true or not.

Silicon Valley billionaires have already spent more than $300 million to defeat Proposition 40, saturating the screens of Californian voters with specious arguments and lies.
They have employed numerous tactics: qualifying two poison-pill bills for the ballot (Prop 41 and 42) that would invalidate the billionaire tax; falsely claiming the tax on billionaires would hit everyone; hiding behind proxies, etc.
This clumsy attempt at character assassination, 6 days before the vote on November 3, is one more tactic.

Nobody should ignore the context in which this is taking place.
There is a strong anti-science current in the United States, coming from the White House and its tech billionaire allies who view universities as an impediment to their rule and greed.
And of course, Californians are currently voting to create a wealth tax on billionaires, Proposition 40, which you hate because you understand that it could kickstart the movement to tax billionaires in the US and globally.

Your predecessors tried to discredit researchers who established that smoking caused cancer and uncovered human-made climate change.
They had success for some time, they slowed down public action and killed a lot of people in the process, but ultimately failed. You will fail too.

Billionaires pay very little tax relative to their ability to pay – your patron Peter Thiel, Mr @tylercowen , is well positioned to know that. xitter.gq/gabriel_zucman/status/…
ICE is hunting down immigrants with the help of Palantir.
In six months, Palantir’s founder, @PeterThiel, will be able to start spending unimaginable sums of money —completely tax-free — to bankroll the political causes dear to his heart.
He'll be able to do it thanks to a tax-avoidance scheme he’s been building for more than 20 years, at a staggering cost to the American taxpayer.
Let me explain. 🧵

While research papers can always be questioned and improved, the core findings of our work are beyond doubt, and no AI slop or propaganda will change that.
Extreme wealth has exploded in the United States — you, Mr @elonmusk, are well positioned to know that.

You have decided to write a new chapter in the long history of merchants of doubt.
AI opens up new possibilities to try to discredit research and academics, and you’ve decided to exploit them.
You are continuing a long tradition, with the new weapons now at your disposal.
But you have one big problem.

This AI hit job adds nothing to this collective work. It treats methodological choices we discuss at length in our own work as “major flaws”.
It highlights assumptions discussed in the literature and labels them “errors”. It elevates trivial points as somehow crucial. And it peppers all of this with a torrent of meaningless slop. There is no intelligence in this, only malice.
All the experts who have commented on your hit job have found it to be worthless.

Our work has long been thoroughly scrutinized by the global community of researchers. Our code and data are public. Comments, extensions, and refinements have been discussed in numerous conferences and journals for many years.
This is how science operates.

Hello @elonmusk and @tylercowen ,
You have just decided to publicly attack our research, six days before the vote on the California billionaire wealth tax.
Your attempt to discredit our work and that of our numerous academic colleagues is pathetic.

The game’s up for trickle-down economics, because nothing ever trickled down... it was siphoned up.
Today’s Budget will tell us whether Andy Burnham is serious about his promise to end neoliberalism, or whether it’s more of the same siphon-up economics.

ATAF’s benchmarking study visit to the South African Revenue Service (SARS), led by Ms Sameera Khan, Head of the Project Management Office, explored practical lessons in artificial intelligence (AI), robotic process automation (RPA), advanced analytics and digital modernisation.
Through technical sessions and demonstrations, the delegation examined how SARS integrates these technologies into core tax operations, builds internal capabilities, manages compliance risks and ensures that innovation is adopted responsibly and securely from 26-27 October 2026.
As Ms Khan noted in her opening remarks, “We view this engagement not as a one-off visit, but as the beginning of a deeper and more structured technical collaboration between ATAF and SARS.”
The insights gained will inform ATAF’s AI readiness frameworks, digital transformation solutions and support, helping member countries pursue practical, responsible and sustainable approaches to modernising their tax administrations.
