I spent two years working with Stephen Miller. His appointment as White House chief of staff is among the most dangerous personnel decisions in the history of our republic. I say that without reservation.

Definitely not gonna spend the rest of the day thinking about how the Houthis are more responsive than the GoC comms apparatus
You have to email the Houthis if you want your ship to cross the Red Sea. They reply within 24hrs

Bad policy, bad character make bad politics: erratic tariffs, impulsive Iran war, blanket pardons, apparent corruption, weaponized justice, ICE brutality, mountainous deficits, hiding Epstein, abandoning allies and coddling enemies. Hoping for a course correction, for the country and for my party.

President Isaac Herzog sent a warning letter last month to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other top officials, warning of a “highly explosive and dangerous reality” in the West Bank, and lamenting the ongoing “moral disgrace” of settler violence. “A severe flare-up on the ground is liable to carry severe and far-reaching consequences, both for Israel’s security and its functioning as a sovereign state, and for Israel’s international standing, Diaspora Jewry, the Israeli economy, and more,” warned Herzog, adding that there is a “moral disgrace and the stain on us” when innocent Palestinians are harmed. Herzog wrote the letter after a September 30 visit to the Judea and Samaria Division headquarters. Read more on The Times of Israel.

The second coming of Donald Trump had people terrified that the centre would not hold, as per WB Yeats famous poem. His repudiation in the mid-terms is cause for relief that the best have found their passionate intensity and the worst have lost their conviction. 1/2

This piece in the current @spectator on the future of the Trump presidency is perceptive, and I sense is about right.

“I don’t want to be just sitting there for two years vetoing everything.” President Donald Trump picked up a call from @DashaBurns on POLITICO Elections Live and talked to us about the blue wave and how he’s willing to work with incoming congressional Democrats.  Watch live now: politi.co/4AgCofb

🚨What happens if Trump loses the House and Senate? Clinton & Obama already set precedent. They weren't done at all in their last 2 years. Victor Davis Hanson explains: Clinton fell to 37% approval but left office at about 66%. In between, he was impeached but not convicted and bombed Serbia for 78 days without Congress. Obama's approval fell to 38% and still left office near 60%. He bombed Libya in 2011 without Congress, ran hundreds of drone strikes in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia, and started bombing ISIS in Iraq and Syria in 2014 without a new vote. He said "I've got a pen and I've got a phone," and skipped the Senate on the Iran deal and Paris. Low approval and a hostile Congress didn't finish them. For both, it was the best thing that ever happened to them in some ways.

Dems will get 55 Senate seats and 250+ House seats. Looking at the Senate map and considering such a massive House margin, it is very unlikely Republicans will recapture the Congress in 2028. Might not have a shot at Senate control until 2032.

Assuming Republicans lose the seats where prediction markets have the Democrats at 90+% to win, that would produce 55 Democrat Senate seats. Chance of confirming a worthy successor to Justice Thomas and/or Alito during President Trump’s term: Zero. Chance of confirming a worthy successor during a hypothetical GOP admin 2029-2033: probably zero (GOP won’t be able to recapture enough seats in 28).

Interesting analogy - the relief people are feeling this morning is like release felt after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
What will it mean for the UK and the world outside America that Donald Trump is now surrounded and hemmed in by a Congress that opposes him and his major policies and by world leaders who mostly feel the same? More specifically, will it embolden Andy Burnham, the leaders of the EU, Canada, Japan and their allies to cooperate with the Democrats in the Senate and the House to do what it takes to end Trump’s war against Iran, to bring Putin to the negotiating table, to reduce prosperity-destroying tariffs, to contain the extreme risks of artificial intelligence and in general to temper Trump’s reckless adventurism? The paralysis of the rest of the planet in the face of Trump’s unilateralism must surely be at an end. His moral authority, his claim to lead the free world, is much diminished. That is not in doubt now the American legislature is decisively set against him, and after American voters have spoken unambiguously that they reject most of what he has done in office that has a direct impact not only them but on us. America’s soaring gasoline price, that magnified his unpopularity, is just one narrow proxy of the wider harm he wreaked, to security and stability. Weakened too is his power. We will see whether he and a Democrat Congress can work together constructively. The presidential veto, and their control over important appointments and money mean they have to try to get along. But even if the result is stalemate, that is almost certainly better for global prosperity than what we’ve been living through. Much has been torn down overnight. What is striking is how many people have contacted me with gasps of relief and hope that I last recall when the Berlin Wall was demolished (I am not exaggerating - Trump insinuated his way into our collective subconscious, mostly as a bringer of a humming anxiety). There are risks that a wounded Trump will attempt to lash out in ways that deflect from his humiliation. And given his relative autonomy in foreign affairs, the consequences may not be benign. But even so, today is about opportunity, not fear.

This guy continues to impress. The Republic has survived and the first light of dawn is on the horizon, Ossoff says.
OSSOFF: The American people have rebuked the depravity, corruption, and incompetence of the failed lame duck President Donald J. Trump.

"They stole the elections". The now familiar cry of extremists who lose.
