There is much to celebrate this week, but I want to call specific attention to historic gains Democratic women made in representation:
- For the first time in history, over 100 Democratic women will serve in the U.S. House.
- At least 16 Democratic women will serve in the Senate.
- At least 14 Democratic women will serve as governors, a record high.
- A record of 2,600 Democratic women running for seats in state legislatures helped flip 12 majorities and break 11 supermajorities.
- Four states elected their first woman governor: Georgia, Minnesota, Ohio, and Tennessee.
- @KeishaBottoms will be the first Black woman to serve as a governor.
- @DebHaalandNM will be the first Native American woman to serve as a governor.
- @GinaHinojosaTX will be the first Latina to serve as governor of Texas.
- @peggyflanagan will be the first Native American woman to serve in the Senate.
I am beyond excited to see these extraordinary people and public servants tackle accountability, affordability, and our other challenges to make life better for everyone in this country.
Congratulations to everyone who ran: win or lose, fighting for what's right is always worth it.

Women Soul of the Nation
Georgia voters elected eight Black women to help lead our state. Their work will touch our lives every day, from how we educate our children and protect voting rights to what families pay to keep the lights on.
I’m celebrating these women and the people who organized, registered voters and showed up to make these victories possible.
Congratulations to Georgia’s newly elected leaders:
Keisha Lance Bottoms, governor
Tanya Miller, attorney general
Penny Brown Reynolds, secretary of state
Katherine E. Juhan-Arnold, commissioner of agriculture
Nikki Porcher, commissioner of labor
Lydia Powell, state school superintendent
Keisha Sean Waites, insurance commissioner
Shelia Edwards, Public Service Commission, District 5
I pray that you use the power entrusted to you to protect people’s rights, make their lives better and serve every Georgian with dignity and care.

I wish my mother could have seen Georgia last night.
When she called on women to become the soul of the nation, she was asking us to help shape what this country stands for and how it treats its people. She spent her life putting those words into action.
I thought of her as Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor of a U.S. state. I thought, too, of the Black women who went door to door, registered voters and organized for years. Many did not live to see what they helped make possible.
Congratulations, Governor-elect Bottoms. Congratulations also to Penny Brown Reynolds, Georgia’s next secretary of state, and Tanya Miller, our next attorney general.
I’m thinking of the Black girls who will grow up seeing women who look like them lead Georgia. I pray they see what my mother saw in leadership: the power to make life better for others and the responsibility to use it.
