In December, Media Lab spinoff @aurelia_labs plans to test the latest generation of TESSERAE (Tessellated Electromagnetic Space Structures for the Exploration of Reconfigurable, Adaptive Environments) on the International Space Station. It’s a step toward building what Media Lab alum @ArielEkblaw, Aurelia’s CEO, calls “science-fiction-worthy, big, grand structures” in space. cnn.com/science/self-assembl…

Headlines and conversations about the risks of AI are everywhere — but many of them focus on end-of-the-world scenarios, while the everyday dangers of AI go unmeasured. That’s why the MIT Media Lab’s Advancing Humans with AI (@aha_medialab) program, in collaboration with the @USCMarshall's Neely Center for Ethical Leadership and Decision Making, UC @BerkeleyHaas, and the Psychology of Technology Institute (@psych_of_tech), is launching ImpactBench, an expert-guided, open and evolving evaluation framework for measuring AI’s impact on human wellbeing. Its findings also inform a consumer-facing tool, the AI Nutrition Label, which provides simple, at-a-glance ratings, modeled on food nutrition labels, showing how a given AI system scores on avoiding harm and promoting wellbeing. Media Lab alum Paris Smaragdis, now a professor in the Music and Theatre Arts program of @mit_shass, develops computer systems that can hear and interpret the world around them. The tools he builds have applications ranging from musical expression to environmental monitoring. “I like to say that I do the same thing the computer vision folks do, but instead I do it for hearing,” he says. news.mit.edu/2026/making-mac…

In a new study, MIT researchers and collaborators demonstrate a method to accurately track muscle movement using tiny magnetic beads implanted in the muscle. These measurements could make it easier for people with certain types of amputations to control their prosthetic limbs. Media Lab Prof. Hugh Herr is senior author of the paper, out today in @Nature Sensors; PhD student Chris Shallal and Media Lab alum Cameron Taylor are co-lead authors. @mcgovernmit @YangTanColl news.mit.edu/2026/magnetic-s…

The @space_enabled group at the MIT Media Lab is excited to host Zero Robotics, and is inviting high school students everywhere to join the 2027 High School Tournament! Zero Robotics is a programming competition where students write code to control Astrobee, the free-flying robot that lives aboard the International Space Station. Teams of students work together to solve a game challenge using Astrobee and compete against teams from around the world. The five-week program runs from Monday, January 11 to Friday, February 12, 2027, with the final event planned for Friday, February 19, 2027. Zero Robotics is recruiting teams internationally! Grab at least three teammates and register by December 16, 2026: media.mit.edu/events/zero-ro…

New from the @CDecoders group: An implantable drug delivery device that could one day help to prevent recurrences of glioblastoma. The device, called LUCID, combines extended-release drug therapy with ultrasound transducers that use sound waves to help drugs spread farther through the brain and bypass the blood-brain barrier. Media Lab Prof. @dagdevirencanan is senior author of the study, out today in Device (@cellpressnews). news.mit.edu/2026/implantabl…

“Computation is the central medium of our lifetime. And it's not just a technical medium, it's a cultural medium. So, I'm exploring the culture of code.” Prof. @zachlieberman reflects on his decade-long practice of daily code sketches. youtube.com/watch?v=CaF0t8Qr…

The next frontier is AI that improves itself, and we believe everyone should know how to build it. This semester, Ao @ao_qu18465 and I are teaching 'How to AI an AI for Almost Anything' @MIT @medialab -- a new course on self-evolving AI systems that recursively improve from experience, feedback, memory, and exploration over long interaction horizons. The key idea: intelligence shouldn't stop improving when training ends. We cover four levels of evolution: (1) context evolution through prompt optimization and context management, (2) harness evolution through memory, tools & skills, workflow optimization, and multi-agent systems, (3) model evolution through RL, distillation, test-time training, self-play, and continual learning, (4) task evolution through generating increasingly complex synthetic tasks, simulations, evaluations, and environments. Slides, readings, and videos available: mit-mi.github.io/how2ai-cour… We thank @Kimi_Moonshot and @PrimeIntellect for generously sponsoring API credits!
