NEW RESEARCH: As Americans prepare to vote in next week's midterm elections, new research from Merrill College suggests political distrust may be motivating some citizens to become more engaged rather than driving them away from democratic involvement.
A study funded by #UMD's Maryland Democracy Initiative found residents interviewed in Frederick County, Maryland, expressed deep frustration with politicians, skepticism toward news media and anxiety about the future of the American Dream. Yet many remained committed to voting, volunteering, following local news and holding elected officials accountable.
Frederick County offers a revealing setting for understanding political divisions as a “purple” county — one of Maryland’s most evenly split electorates between Republicans and Democrats.
Conducted by researchers Jodi McFarland Friedman and Sarah Oates, the study involved in-depth interviews with 18 Frederick County residents from April through June 2026 about how citizens experience American democracy.

The Milwaukee Brewers' lucky charm this postseason? #merrillmade alum/Brewers announcer Josh Maurer (@JoshMaurerPxP).
Maurer called play-by-play for the Brewers' eight-run fifth inning in Game 3 of the World Series — and that was just the latest big moment with him at the mic this magical postseason.
"The word that keeps coming to my mind is fortunate," he told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I'm just so fortunate."

EXCITING NEWS: The Philip Merrill College of Journalism and NPR have entered into a multiyear partnership to host NPR’s public editor at Merrill College beginning in January 2027! The incoming public editor will serve as a Merrill College visiting professor specializing in trust, transparency and media ethics.
The public editor fulfills an important role as the public’s representative to NPR in matters of journalism and journalism ethics. The public editor immerses themselves in NPR’s content to represent NPR’s audience by raising questions about NPR’s work, highlighting where NPR succeeds and falls short in its mission, and examining the editorial dilemmas faced by, and decisions made by, NPR’s journalists. The public editor addresses these issues through columns, newsletters and on-air appearances.
“We are thrilled to embark on this new partnership with NPR, one that will benefit our students, the entire Merrill College community and journalism as a whole,” Merrill College Dean Rafael Lorente said. “It is imperative that we as journalists connect with the public in order to rebuild trust and make sure that journalism successfully serves its important role in a free and democratic society. Bringing the public editor to the University of Maryland allows us to foster open conversation with news consumers.”
The college will post the position with applications open soon. Merrill College will also hire staff to support the work of the public editor.

This week's #merrillmade intern is Benjamin Messinger, who interned for @dcwitness over the summer!
As a reporting intern, Benjamin would attend one to four D.C. Superior Court hearings a day, where he would take and digitize notes, input data from the hearings and write articles about them.
"At first, I was unsure about this internship because it was unlike anything I had covered in the past. I covered mostly sports and a little bit of politics," he said. "But I learned about the legal system in a way that I never thought of before and got a unique view on the jobs of judges and lawyers and really delved into the stories of defendants in major criminal cases in D.C." #fearlessjournalism
