Missing People’s Based on a True Story campaign uses the public’s interest in true crime to make an important point: these stories aren’t entertainment. They’re real people, and real families still waiting for answers.
This campaign is about shifting how we talk about missing people and standing with the families behind every disappearance.
At the centre is our new Responsible Narratives charter — a commitment to engaging with these stories responsibly and respectfully.

This week, we met @LabourSatvir, Minister for Safeguarding and VAWG alongside @JoshMacAlister, Minister for Children and Families, and @MichelleWelshMP, Chair of the APPG on Missing Adults and Children this week to discuss priorities for the government's leadership on missing.
Ministers heard about the importance of providing up to date guidance for supporting children who go missing, so children get the right support as soon as they signal something is wrong.
We also spoke about the importance of providing better direction for how different areas of public service, from health to education and policing can work together to ensure everyone who goes missing gets the best response and an opportunity to talk about why they went missing and what happened while they were away.
80% of adults who go missing are experiencing mental health crisis, and over 60% of children who go missing are reported missing more than once. A clear government strategy could help to reduce repeat missing, ensure everyone gets follow up support and reduce deaths during missing episodes.

Today we mark what would have been the 25th birthday of Richard Okorogheye.
On 22 March 2021, Richard - who lived with sickle cell disease - was 19 when he left his home and travelled to Loughton in Essex. He was unfortunately found deceased two weeks later.
Richard's untimely death has been devastating for his mother Evidence, and she has worked tirelessly to campaign for answers, accountability and meaningful change following a lack of police response in the early days of Richard's disappearance.
Richard's legacy lives on in his mother's pursuit for justice in ensuring other missing Black people's stories are heard and are given a fair response by the media and relevant authorities.
We are thinking of Evidence today and continue to send her our deepest condolences.

A family has renewed a plea for information following the disappearance of Damien Nettles when he was just 16.
The teenager vanished on the Isle of White on 2 November 1996. Nine men have been arrested since then, but all were released without charge.
Damien's mum Valerie says his disappearance has been "incredibly distressing".
As part of @Telegraph Charity Appeal, they have spoken to Peter Boxell, who has written a letter to his son, Lee. Lee has been missing since September 1988, and was aged just 15 at the time of his disappearance.
Missing People have supported Lee's family over the years, and Peter is a member of our Missing People Choir, which offers an opportunity for those with missing loved ones to get together and sing.
