Update: Cyrus McGarrell, a DB transfer from Northern Illinois U, has been assigned jersey #3 for Western, becoming the first Mustang football player to don the number since 2009 when new head coach (then-QB) Michael Faulds wore it.
McGarrell wore #2 & #22 during his NIU career.
According to the 2026 Western Mustangs football roster, no one has been assigned jersey #3 this season, despite the number being unretired by its last owner, new head coach @MichaelFaulds, earlier this year.
RB Jack Kelly, who wore the now-retired #13 last season, will wear #4.

Following the 2009 @OUAsport football season, Western head football coach Greg Marshall said “as long as I’m the head coach here, no one will ever wear #3.”
Michael Faulds flipped the script on him this year, unretiring 3, and retiring Marshall’s old number, 13.

Kickoffs consistently produce the highest-force head impacts in football.

Western Mustangs linebacker-turned-researcher Jeff Brooks says no concussion symptoms ≠ no damage.
The idea: treat head impacts like a pitch count. Hit your threshold → helmet off, non-contact only, until you recover.
