Today the Church prays for the Church Suffering: the souls in purgatory. On All Souls Day, every priest may celebrate three Masses for the faithful departed. That wasn’t always true. In August 1915, one year into World War I, Pope Benedict XV saw millions of men dying on the battlefield and extended this permission to priests around the world. He wanted as many Masses as possible offered for their souls. Benedict XV also gave the Church a new title for Our Lady: Queen of Peace.
