I opened an investigation into the horrific conditions at El Valle Detention Facility following reports of detainees participating in hunger strikes. It’s clear that DHS continues to demonstrate gross disregard for our health, dignity, personhood, and the safety of our communities. We must abolish ICE, dismantle DHS, and reimagine safety.

Today is day 17 of a hunger strike in the privately-run El Valle ICE detention Center. Shokhrukh Abdullaev’s is one of the hunger strikers, who has been in detention for almost a year, while private companies profit from his pain. In detention, Shokhrukh has been denied access to medical care and humane treatment. Inhumane detention and families torn apart don't make us safer. I call for the release of all hunger strikers and demand they receive protection from further detention and deportation. We must end detention, abolish ICE, and dismantle DHS.

Eight years ago, our nation and the Jewish community suffered a horrific antisemitic act of violence at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh. We mourn the 11 members of the community taken from us too soon. We must continually recommit ourselves to fighting antisemitism, condemning hate speech and violent rhetoric, and to defending our shared humanity. Let us be light and instruments of peace.
