Emerging from a summer semi-hiatus to share I've got a new story live online today with @TheFLReview! "Mother and Child" took early inspiration from a real airplane encounter and a real little girl I'll never forget. Endless thanks to @Jake_Wolff for believing in this one.
Live today, new fiction from @keddymilligan!
“She’s got her dog, her big retriever, the first time she’s flown with him, and she almost wishes a stranger would complain about it. Just enough for an excuse to get mad back at someone out loud.”

Proud day in the Milligan household as @keddymilligan defended her thesis - her first novel!
Defended my MFA thesis today—my novel! It still has a long road ahead of it, but I’ll take this for the milestone it feels like it is. Huge thanks to @antonyanelson, @cdivakaruni, @alwurzbacher and the @uhcwp. Off to celebrate (and sleep) 🎉

Endlessly honored to have a story in the latest issue of @fictionmag alongside such tremendous writers. LOOSELY inspired by my days waitressing on a lobster pier, “Lucky’s” has my favorite last line I probably ever will write. Huge thanks to the editors for believing in this one!
If you haven’t read Katie’s story, go check it out! My literary leading lady 😍

It’s hard to say how amazing it feels to hold my own writing in my hands for the first time. This is the story that first made me believe I could write for real. This is the story that got me into grad school. Thanks to @ND_Quarterly for giving “Witness” an amazing home.

We've released our @joinhomebase June report on the state of the Main Street economy (full report here: hmbase.co/june-2020-report), with a few interesting findings...
When the jobs report surprised people, and our @homebase_data predicted that -- pretty cool to see
The reception for @homebase_data data, being viewed as a canonical data source for the top tier of policy making, has surprised all of us @joinhomebase .
Clearly there's a massive gap we're helping to fill. Jobs report confusion emphasizes that.

Glad to support continued coverage of how this shutdown continues to hurt local small business. “A variety of real-time measures show that even in states that have recently eased restrictions, like Georgia and South Carolina, business activity has been slow to recover.”
The U.S. just lost 20 million jobs. The temporary layoffs that comprise 18 million of them could turn into permanent job losses if the federal government errs in its response in the coming weeks. nyti.ms/35KL4gy
Glad to have our data featured in the @nytimes to #supportsmallbusiness during such unprecedented times. Sobering stats, but hopefully continued coverage can help local small business.
Thanks for sharing our data @jimtankersley, glad to be able to provide insights during this unprecedented time. Data updated daily here: hmbase.co/covid-19

Pretty scary data from my company @joinhomebase indicates that the worst is yet to come for small businesses and hourly employees. Proud to work for a company that continues to #SupportSmallBusinesses
1) Yesterday’s unemployment data was bad but it’s a lagging indicator of the disaster for workers. 81% of SMB hourly employees have had paychecks reduced. It’s getting worse for them & the economy. Here’s why in responses from 3.5k hourly employees & data from @joinhomebase:

We surveyed 3,500 hourly small business employees: 35% are extremely anxious about their financial situation, and 44% can't last more than 2 weeks without a new source of income.

#COVID19 having a more gradual impact on small businesses than previous natural disasters. 60% of small businesses still open yesterday vs. <20% during Harvey + Maria. Rolling closures will likely continue to bring that % down day over day.
