Congratulations to Monica Tappe, RN, our DAISY Award recipient! When a patient felt anxious about biopsy results, Monica took time to listen, explain the findings, and offer reassurance. Thank you for showing how compassion and connection make a difference! 💛 uihc.pulse.ly/tmywexo5do

Less than six months after being told she had colon cancer, Paige learned she had breast cancer. "I was so frustrated and so mad because I felt like my body had just betrayed me." Then she learned she could get the expertise of University of lowa Health Care closer to her Clive, lowa, home at Mission Cancer + Blood. "Having everything here and not having to travel for care was really important, to not have to drive in the car for hours on end to go find that prestigious care that you so desperately want."

Four people. Nearly 50 years of combined service. Nursing roots run deep in this family. “When I was younger, just seeing my family in those roles, being so knowledgeable — I thought was super neat,” says Angelina Weaver, BSN, RN. “I wanted to be a nurse or health care worker too." 💛🩺 uihc.pulse.ly/nypcviuupp

Did you know the “mother” of pediatric pain management was a University of Iowa nurse? 💛 Joanne “Jo” Eland, BSN, MA, PhD, transformed how healthcare professionals recognize and treat pain in children, leaving a lasting impact on pediatric care worldwide. While supervising students on the pediatric oncology unit, she noticed that pain in children was treated less aggressively than in adults. Her master's thesis, Children's Communication of Pain, was the first published study to document the disparity, challenging long-standing myths about children's pain and initiating future research and advocacy to prevent the physical and psychological consequences of untreated pain.

Congratulations to Brooke Roe, BSN, RN, on her DAISY Award! 🌼 After a young patient struggled for days to take his medication, Brooke found a simple fix, mixing it into apple juice and giving it by syringe, so he could take it stress-free. "Every patient needs something different to feel comfortable," she says. "You need to get creative." uihc.pulse.ly/ty1hzv4fe4

When Amy was first diagnosed with breast cancer, the West Des Moines, Iowa, woman didn’t want to travel nearly two hours for care. Then she learned Mission Cancer + Blood was a part of University of Iowa Health Care — and everything changed. “Now I’m getting the best of both worlds,” Amy says. “We have the research, we have the backing, we have all of the programming that comes from UI Health Care, but now I can still be in my backyard.”

Callie was born almost six weeks early at a local hospital in 2024, but was flown to our hospital when doctors discovered she had air in her abdomen. An exploratory surgery when she was 2 days old resulted in an appendectomy — and made her the youngest female in the world to have the surgery, according to Guinness World Records! 🥇
