If you haven’t listened to yesterday’s Space hosted by @schmrypto, I strongly encourage you to do so. It was necessary. Uncomfortable, but fucking necessary. There are serious accusations being made about things that have happened over the past few years. Some accounts have reportedly been corroborated. More people may come forward. And while accusations deserve to be examined fairly, the people speaking up deserve to be heard. I know this isn’t what most of you want to hear. You’ll scroll past it. We have a small enough space already, and every ugly headline seems to hurt everyone’s bags. And for some people, that’s all that fucking matters. What’s the ticker? Where’s my money? What does this space owe me? This space doesn’t owe you shit. But you owe the people in it some fucking respect. We’ve become so anesthetized to awful behavior that even serious allegations of assault become another news cycle, another argument, another thing to shrug off until the next scandal arrives. There are pieces of shit everywhere. And apparently, there are some in this space, too. Particularly at IRL meetups, where women have described being made uncomfortable, having boundaries crossed, and receiving attention they never fucking asked for. And let’s be perfectly clear. Just because someone enjoys attention doesn’t mean they’re inviting YOUR attention. Being friendly isn’t consent. Being attractive isn’t an invitation. Being at a meetup doesn’t give anybody the right to put their fucking hands on someone. Nearly 2,000 people came through yesterday’s Space. Hundreds more reportedly listened privately. Good. At least people are listening. But I wonder how many people deliberately stayed away because acknowledging this shit might interfere with their comfortable little world. You shouldn’t need a daughter, a wife, a sister, or a mother to give a fuck about women being treated with basic human dignity. You shouldn’t have to imagine it happening to someone you love before you decide it’s wrong. And no, we shouldn’t automatically convict people based on accusations. Due process matters. Truth matters. But so does having the fucking courage to listen instead of immediately dismissing people because the conversation is inconvenient. I’ve spent years making people laugh. That’s what I do. But don’t mistake that for indifference. If I ever witness someone at a meetup harassing, intimidating, assaulting, or violating another person’s boundaries, I will intervene. I will stand with the person being targeted, and I will make damn sure the behavior is confronted and reported. Because your portfolio isn’t more important than someone’s safety. Your reputation isn’t more important than the truth. And your place in this community doesn’t entitle you to another person’s body. And I can tell you this much. This conversation isn’t over. Not by a long shot. And 20, 30, 50 years from now, the discomfort of having these conversations will be nothing more than a small but necessary footnote in the growth and betterment of this space. A space so many of you claim to care deeply about, yet seem far more concerned with protecting your fucking bags than protecting the people who make this community possible. Because if this space is going to be worth something someday, it better stand for something today. Nobody owes you their attention. Nobody owes you their affection. Nobody owes you their silence. End of story.
