“Congratulations to Speaker Schultz and the newly elected House leadership team. I look forward to working together as we begin this next chapter and build on the strong foundation that has made Utah a national leader. While the House and Senate each bring different perspectives to the process, we share a commitment to serving Utahns, tackling the challenges ahead and building an even stronger future for our state.” –President Elect Evan Vickers

Utah and Ireland share strong economic ties with Utah companies already creating jobs and doing business across the Atlantic. Last week, Utah lawmakers joined Gov. Spencer Cox and a delegation of business and higher education leaders on a trade mission to Ireland and Northern Ireland. Through meetings with leaders in technology, manufacturing and life sciences, the delegation explored opportunities to expand trade and attract new investment to Utah, supporting good-paying jobs and a stronger economy for Utah families.

The best time to reduce wildfire risk is long before a fire starts. Today, House Majority Leader Casey Snider joined Sen. John Curtis, members of the U.S. Forest Service, our state forester, and wildfire experts for a roundtable on healthier forests, wildfire prevention, and community preparedness.

The discussion focused on expanding prescribed burns, removing barriers that delay forest management projects, and giving states a greater role in managing wildfire risk. Utah is dedicated to working with our federal partners to improve forest health, reduce wildfire risk, and protect Utah communities – not just by preventing fires, but also rehabilitating affected lands and ensuring our forests remain resilient.

This morning I joined Dr. Keith Humphreys, Dr. Stephen Eide, and Utah Homeless Services Director Tyler Clancy at Odyssey House for "Breaking the Cycle: Actionable Solutions for Communities," a conversation about practical ways to tackle addiction, public safety, and recovery. For too long, we've been handed a false choice: we can either help people heal OR maintain law and order. Utah is showing we can do both: unsheltered homelessness down 9.7% and overdose deaths down 9.3%. More work ahead!

Two years after Utah launched its AI regulatory sandbox, we’re using what we’ve learned to ask tough questions about how these tools should operate in health care. Today, Rep. Dave Shallenberger joined Sen. Kirk Cullimore, state agencies, health care providers, and new sandbox participants. The sandbox allows Utah to test, measure, and learn before deciding what, if anything, should become law. The standard is straightforward: Patient health comes first. If an AI tool doesn’t maintain or improve patient outcomes, it hasn’t met the mark. New technology should earn trust through results. Utah is evaluating these tools carefully and building policy around what the evidence shows.

This morning, Rep. Candice Pierucci joined Dr. Keith Humphreys and Dr. Stephen Eide at Odyssey House for a conversation on addiction, public safety and recovery, moderated by State Homeless Coordinator Tyler Clancy. This year, the Utah Legislature invested more than $42 million in homelessness services, mental and behavioral health care, and targeted interventions for people cycling through the criminal justice system. That work is focused on outcomes, not just inputs. Unsheltered homelessness declined 9.7% this year, while Utah continues working to reduce drug deaths and help more people achieve lasting recovery. As Rep. Pierucci emphasized, accountability and compassion are not mutually exclusive. We can enforce the law fairly, give people grace, and make sure the programs we fund are actually helping Utahns get back on their feet.

This morning, Utah leaders broke ground on Convergence Hall at The Point, a new hub designed to connect Utah’s researchers, students, entrepreneurs and businesses. The Legislature helped lay the groundwork through H.B. 530 and the Nucleus Institute, creating new opportunities to connect talent, research and investment, and help promising ideas move from the lab to the marketplace.

Years from now, the measure of this project won’t be the building, but the ideas that started here, the companies that grew here, and the opportunities created for Utahns.

Last week, we celebrated the grand reopening of West Desert Motorsports Park in Tooele County. Rep. Candice Pierucci began working in 2023 to strengthen Utah’s protections against land ownership by restricted foreign entities. Her work continued with H.B. 516 in 2024, which required restricted foreign entities to divest their Utah land. That law ultimately led to the sale of the motorsports park and its return to local ownership, where its new owners have already invested more than $50 million.

Last week’s reopening was a chance to see what that work looks like in practice, with an iconic Utah asset back in local hands.

Utah ranks No. 1 in the nation for the lowest student loan debt burden, according to WalletHub. For our students to succeed, higher education needs to be affordable, accessible, and relevant. That means keeping costs low, helping students graduate on time, and investing in high-demand programs that lead to strong careers.

Congratulations to Fervo Energy on achieving first power at Cape Station in Beaver County, a significant milestone for geothermal energy in Utah. Utah’s all-of-the-above energy policy is focused on keeping costs low, maintaining reliability, and meeting growing electricity demand. Enhanced geothermal adds another tool to that mix: 24/7 baseload power that taps into the abundance of heat beneath our feet.

Great work by San Juan School District, where K-3 reading proficiency has jumped from 42% to 70% in just three years. Building on successes like this, Utah lawmakers invested $16 million statewide to add reading specialists and provide targeted, small-group support for K-3 students, with a goal of 80% proficiency by 2030. kutv.com/news/education/san-…
