In 1928, the Tamiami Trail opened a 108-mile route between Naples and Miami, creating the first road connection across the Everglades between Florida’s Gulf and Atlantic coasts. Before that, miles of wetlands and cypress swamps made the overland journey difficult. The east-west section took 12 years to build. Today, the route remains part of U.S. 41 and one of Florida’s most storied drives. 📍 Tamiami Trail (U.S. 41)

Happy Columbus Day! Christopher Columbus opened the Americas to European exploration and laid a foundation for the United States. History is here to visit: a Columbus monument at Port Everglades, the historic streets of St. Augustine, the traditions in the Panhandle, and lighthouses that have guided ships to our shores for centuries. 📍Marinelli Gardens | @visitlauderdale

If you are traveling to Northwest Florida in the next few days, check current conditions for your specific destination before you go. Some areas are still recovering from Hurricane Isaias. Assessments are underway. Much of the rest of the state is open, but confirm with your hotel, your attraction, and your transportation provider before you travel. Travelers can also get real-time destination views with our Florida Now livecam page to make accurate determinations about travel plans. Traveler advisories, emergency lodging options, and the Florida Now webcams are available at: VISITFLORIDA.com/more/curren…. For official updates: @FLSERT and FloridaDisaster.org.

Postcards have always had a way of capturing Florida’s big views. This one, taken around 1982, shows the Seven Mile Bridge stretching across the waters of the Florida Keys. The original bridge began as part of Henry Flagler’s Overseas Railroad, completed in 1912. The modern Seven Mile Bridge opened to traffic in 1982. 📍@thefloridakeys

Each September, St. Augustine commemorates the September 8, 1565 landing of Spanish Admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and the establishment of the settlement that became the oldest continuously occupied European-established city in the continental United States. Founder’s Day marks this chapter in Florida history through a landing reenactment, living-history demonstrations and commemorative events. The history of this place extends much further. Long before 1565, these shores and waterways were home to Timucua-speaking Mocama communities whose history remains an important part of St. Augustine’s story today. 📍 St. Augustine | @FlHistoricCoast

On September 17, 1787, delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the U.S. Constitution, establishing the framework for our system of government. More than two centuries later, the principles enshrined in the Constitution continue to guide our nation and demonstrate the success of liberty. Today, we commemorate Constitution Day and the enduring legacy of the Charters of Freedom. 📍Benjamin Franklin statue at the Franklin County Courthouse, Apalachicola, Florida

Today we remember September 11, 2001... 25 years later. Florida honors the 2,977 lives lost, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the families forever changed. Across our state, memorials stand so we never forget: steel from the Towers, tributes to heroes like Fort Pierce native CeeCee Lyles of Flight 93, and communities that still gather in silence. We will never forget.

The @TheDyrt just ranked St. Andrews State Park Campground the No. 2 best place to camp in the whole Southeast, and it's easy to see why. Tucked between Florida’s Grand Lagoon and the Gulf, this Panama City Beach campground gives you two totally different beach days depending on which way you walk. One side brings bigger waves and clearer water, the other stays calm and quiet. Wander the nature trail through freshwater swamp habitat, watch for deer at dawn and dusk, or settle in at the community fire pit for a round of oversized checkers with your neighbors. 📍 St. Andrews State Park | @Visit_PCB

Somewhere between Key West and a long stretch of A1A, you'll find the boats, the beaches, the bars, and the ballads. This is the Florida that shaped the songs and the stories. In honor of @jimmybuffett today, remember to lend a hand and leave every place a little better than you found it.
