A $750,000 upgrade to @ArkansasState meat lab means more protein for hungry children in the state. The college and Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry and its supporters celebrated with a tour of the facility Wednesday in Jonesboro.
“These upgrades were to implement a high-speed snack stick line and train our students on updated, state-of-the-art equipment you would find in a commercial operation,” says A-State meat lab director Corey Readnour. “Now we’re ready to launch large-scale production.”
Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry provides protein snack sticks made mostly of venison to more than 200 schools in 73 of the state’s 75 counties.
A-State’s lab updates, including a grinder, mixer, cutter, roll stock vacuum packaging and refrigeration, will streamline the jerky-like stick production. Until now, most have been processed in Missouri.
“We’re thankful,” says Ronnie Ritter, president of Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry. “A-State believes it can produce up to 200,000 meat sticks per year for us to give kids around the state.”
Arkansas leads the nation in food insecurity with one in five children going to bed hungry.
Meat stick program sponsors include Arkansas Farm Bureau, Arkansas Community Foundation and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.
