One site, two sides of the same control room, and two very different moments in a nuclear plant’s operating cycle. Byron Clean Energy Center Unit 2 is in its planned refueling outage, bringing in extra workers for a host of maintenance activities while the reactor is offline. 1/3

Along with more people supporting outage work, numerous illuminated indicator lights across the control room reflect the many systems and equipment that have been taken out of their normal operating configuration so they can be inspected, tested, refurbished, or upgraded. 2/3

By comparison, Unit 1 remains online and producing reliable, clean power. With systems operating in their normal configuration, far fewer indicator lights are illuminated and fewer personnel are needed in the control room – a markedly different view of day-to-day ops. 3/3

During one of the hottest summers on record, our nuclear fleet – and the world-class people operating it – rose to the challenge. Our units achieved a remarkable 99.2% average capacity factor, meaning our plants produced at their maximum potential output almost all of the time.
