🇫🇷 France is preparing to tax internet data by the gigabyte.
Lawmakers approved a proposal to charge content providers €0.055 for every GB of data delivered to French users.
This would cover services like Netflix, YouTube, cloud storage and game downloads.
A 100GB game download would generate €5.50 in tax before applicable caps.
The tax would be paid by content providers, not directly by internet users. However, companies could pass some of the cost on through higher subscription prices.
The proposal passed by just 11 votes to 10, despite government opposition.
Its authors estimate it could generate €10 BILLION annually.
This is not yet law. The proposal is part of France's 2027 budget and still needs further approval.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman says people keeping large amounts of RAM in personal computers is a waste of the world's limited memory supply.
Speaking on the Cheeky Pint podcast, Altman argued that:
- People running AI models locally on their computers are using memory inefficiently.
- He claims RAM in personal computers is used only around 5% of the time.
- He believes the same memory would be better utilized in AI data centers, where it can serve multiple users and workloads.
Altman said it is "quite terrible" from a global resource allocation perspective to have limited DRAM sitting unused in people's computers when data centers could put it to greater use.
Why it matters?
His comments come amid a global memory shortage, as AI companies compete for DRAM supplies, pushing up memory prices and putting pressure on consumer hardware markets.
