In all the excitement I neglected to post about my 200th parkrun at @HHparkrun on Saturday! It was a good one, on a glorious morning. Julia ran too - getting a PB - before a celebratory (Halloween, not my parkrun) swim in the Ladies’ Pond. Thank you marshals, kudos parkrunners. x

I definitely agree. I certainly don’t want a foreign care worker for you either.
I am 66 and do not want a foreign care worker in my later years. Does anyone agree ?

One thing I love seeing from men like Barack Obama, Zohran Mamdani, and Abdul El-Sayed is how openly they love on their wives. It’s how they admire them, openly share their affection, and speak about them with genuine pride. A man being genuinely in love with his wife is not embarrassing. Celebrating her is not weakness. Giving her credit is not doing too much. Bring back men who actually LIKE their wives.

Patrick Stewart attended drama school thanks to his local government council. Taxpayers paid for Stewart’s acting education, which is exactly how it should be! Fund the arts and fund education!

I made a little show as an extra for BBC Radio 4 Extra (pretty much in my own time): it’s being repeated to mark 20 years since the death of Nigel Kneale. This sort of bonus (dare I say it Reithian?) content will not be possible once the station goes: bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0016jc…

Beautiful @bramhallparkrun this morning; constantly surprising, picturesque course - with many a short, sharp climb. That’s 199 done! Thank you marshals, well done fellow parkrunners and -walkers.

With the late, great Oliver Reed currently wowing 2026 audiences all over again with his incredible performance in the restored version of Ken Russell’s ‘The Devils’, I wanted to share this amazing clip of him from 1985. The rather low-res clip comes from ‘In at the Deep End’, a BBC series in which presenter Paul Heiney tries his hands at a profession he had zero experience in. For this episode, Heiney was preparing for an acting role opposite Michael Caine in ‘Water’ and went to Oliver Reed for some pointers on how to play a villain. Please enjoy what happens next.

Tomorrow it will be all forgotten, so let me tell you now - today’s @yorkshiremarathon was my fastest marathon in over nine years, and my fifth fastest ever (out of twenty-nine). Take that, inexorable march of time!

.@ZackPolanski: "Andy Burnham.. needs to explain to communities their bins won't be collected, social services will collapse, libraries will be closed, because he's more worried about defending the genocide he's arming than working with Green councillors" Well said Zack.

It is a basic principle of American democracy that the government can’t selectively target individuals simply because of their political beliefs or what they say. But that’s exactly what the Trump Administration is doing to Congresswoman Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. To understand why this is so appalling, it’s important to know the facts. Congresswoman Omar came to this country with her father when she was 12 years old. Five years later, her father became a naturalized citizen. If Ilhan had been 18 at the time, she would have had to apply for citizenship separately. But because she was 17, she became a naturalized citizen automatically. Congresswoman Omar went on to graduate from college, work as a community organizer, become the first Somali-American legislator elected to public office in the U.S., and win a seat in Congress. There, she has been one of the Trump Administration’s fiercest critics, which has led the president to repeatedly single her out as someone who he believes does not belong in this country. Now the Administration is actively trying to deport Congresswoman Omar, seemingly based solely on the unsubstantiated theory that she was actually 18 when her father was naturalized, and therefore is not a citizen. Federal agents have raided her home, confiscated personal records, and seized her phone — all to try and uncover a nonexistent smoking gun from 20 years ago that will somehow make their case. Think about that. The full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president. And it’s not the first time this has happened. Under President Trump, the Justice Department has repeatedly gone after those he considers his political enemies — from the Attorney General of New York, to the former head of the FBI, to members of the Federal Reserve. In those cases, the prosecutions either stalled or were dismissed for having no basis in law, and the same is likely to happen in this case. But not before Congresswoman Omar’s life has been turned upside down, her legal bills have piled up, and she’s been forced to spend time fighting unsubstantiated charges instead of serving the people of Minnesota. The fact that any president, or any administration, is willing to engage in such transparent efforts to intimidate someone should outrage all Americans, regardless of how they feel about Congresswoman Omar’s political views. Because if this becomes the new normal, there’s no reason to believe it will stop with her — or that future presidents, in either party, won’t do the same.
