Your rights don’t switch off when you go online. The message was simple. Digital rights go beyond privacy. They cover freedom of expression, access to information, equality, security, and accessibility, and they apply to everything from app permissions to AI decisions. Rights in a Connected World. The message was simple. Digital rights go beyond privacy. They cover freedom of expression, access to information, equality, security and accessibility, and they apply to everything from app permissions to AI decisions. Consent means more than tapping “I agree.” Your rights online come with responsibility to others. And when something goes wrong, the steps are to document it, report it, and seek legal help. Young people are the next generation of lawyers, policymakers and regulators. The earlier they learn to ask the right questions about technology and their rights, the better they can protect themselves and others. Thank you to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission and the students at the University of Ibadan. #DigiCivic #DigitalRights #DataProtection #NDPC #BeyondPrivacy

Something is wrong, but what? Reports of TikTok disruption in Kaduna, Kebbi, Kano and Sokoto need clear answers. CSOs are calling for an urgent, transparent and independent investigation. Read: mediarightsagenda.org/joint-… #TikTok #DigitalRights

For weeks, millions in Kaduna, Kebbi, Kano and Sokoto have struggled to access TikTok on ordinary mobile data. Some can only get in through VPNs. Nobody, not regulators, not telecom operators, not TikTok, has said why. DigiCivic Initiative has joined 11 other organisations in a joint statement calling on the NCC, NITDA and ONSA to investigate and publicly disclose the cause, technical, platform-side, or otherwise. We're not alleging a ban. We don't know what this is yet. That's the problem: two weeks of silence, with no explanation, is itself a concern. 📖 Read the full statement: digicivic.org/joint-statemen… #DigiCivic #DigitalRights

Regulation must not become strangulation. This new bill before the Senate would create a commission with the power to register, inspect, audit, and shut down any organisation that receives foreign grants, donations, or technical assistance. That definition is broad enough to cover local church welfare committees, mosque Zakat networks, and the Esusu savings groups market women run to survive. DigiCivic Initiative has formally opposed the Foreign Aid (Regulation, Coordination, Transparency and Disclosure of Foreign Aid, Grants and Donations) Bill, 2026 (SB.1034). We have joined a coalition of over 30 Nigerian civil society organisations calling for it to be withdrawn. Our position is not that foreign aid should go unchecked. It's that Nigeria already has the tools to keep it transparent. Organisations already register with the Corporate Affairs Commission, file financial disclosures, and answer to anti-money laundering and counter terrorism financing authorities where required. This bill does not close a gap in that system. It builds a new layer of bureaucracy on top of one that already works. The deeper concern is independence. The bill would require foreign-funded work to align with government-defined priorities. That raises an obvious question: who decides what counts as a national priority, and what happens to the organisations whose work makes those in power uncomfortable? Laws outlast the governments that pass them. The real test is not how this government might use that power. It's what a future one could do with it. This is how civic space shrinks. Not always through an outright ban, but through heavy regulation, uncertainty, and fear. Civil society is not an enemy of the state. Speaking up is not disloyalty. Criticising government is not a threat to national development. Nigeria can regulate foreign aid without weakening the freedom of association, assembly, and citizens' freedom to represent communities that the government has failed to prioritize. #DigiCivic #CivicSpace #WithdrawSB1034

Independence is thin if people cannot speak, organise, or demand answers about their own data. Civic rights and data rights travel together in practice.

Happy Independence Day, Nigeria! 66 years of nationhood is worth celebrating, and it is also worth remembering what independence actually means in practice: the right of citizens to speak freely, organise, hold power accountable, and shape the country they live in. That is the work we come to every day at DigiCivic Initiative: Protecting digital rights, strengthening civic space, and standing with the people and organisations working to make Nigeria's democracy stronger, not smaller. To every Nigerian doing that work in ways big and small, today is for you too. Happy Independence Day!

6 years after ECOWAS ruled Togo's 2017 shutdown illegal, our ED @MojirayoDR joined Access Now to ask: what makes a ruling actually stick? Her answer: advocacy has to run alongside litigation, not after. A ruling is a starting point, not an ending. #DigitalRights

AI-generated content drove Nigeria's misinformation surge in 2025. For International Day for Universal Access to Information 2026, we look at why access to information alone won't fix an integrity problem. What if the stories our grandparents told us could help us understand the dangers we face online today? Data collected without our consent, digital systems that can leave people unable to access essential services, technology being used to silence and harm women, and AI-generated lies spreading faster than the truth. These are not distant problems, they are already affecting people around us, so what happens when we stop scrolling, gather the evidence and tell the stories behind them? On November 20, 2026, Tales the Village Must Tell brings Nigeria’s storytelling tradition into the digital age through drama, music, spoken word, real stories and live moments of action. And before the night ends, the stories, reports and responses gathered will become part of The Village Record, a public record that will continue to track what happens after the event. Because this time, the village will not only tell the story, it will keep the record! #dataprotection #humanrights #digitalrights #tfgbv

Walking away from a camera doesn’t always protect your privacy. Neither does staying silent. That tension: the right to create content in public spaces vs. an individual’s right to privacy, was at the centre of #PrivCon2026, where our Executive Director, @MojirayoDR, joined a panel of lawyers and privacy experts to unpack it. She broke down Nigeria’s “implied consent” doctrine in public spaces and why it’s not as absolute as most creators assume. Simply walking away from a camera doesn’t withdraw consent, but clearly saying “I don’t want this used” does. She also outlined what recourse looks like when a video goes up without consent: a direct takedown request, a complaint to the NDPC, a constitutional rights action, or a suit against the platform itself. As content creation keeps blurring public and private life, conversations like this shape what a rights-respecting digital space actually looks like for creators, brands, and everyday people who never asked to be in the shot. #DigiCivic #DigitalRights #Privacy #PrivCon2026

Your human rights don’t stop working the moment you go online. The right to speak freely, the right to privacy, the right to organize, the right to access information - these aren’t new rights invented for the internet. They’re protections you already have, applied to a space you spend most of your day in. We put together a breakdown of what digital rights actually mean in practice: the four key pillars of protection and why violations that start online - surveillance, harassment, account takedowns, rarely stay online. Save this. Share it with someone who thinks “digital rights” is an abstract policy term, and not something that applies to their own phone, right now. On 19 August 2026, Mr. Sunday Michael Ogwu, Editor of Pinnacle Daily, was allegedly assaulted and had his mobile device seized during a police clampdown exercise in Lugbe, Abuja. DigiCivic Initiative accompanied him to the FCT Police Command, where the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi, directed the Force Criminal Investigation Department to conduct a formal investigation. We commend the Commissioner's prompt response. We equally condemn any use of force or intimidation against journalists performing their professional duties. Journalism is a public service. It should never expose anyone to violence or retaliation. We call for a thorough, impartial investigation and, where wrongdoing is established, accountability in accordance with the law.
