This conversation remains as timely as ever!
Today marks 14 years since #SuperstormSandy left more than 90% of our customers without power.
Since then, we've been strengthening our electric and natural gas systems — raising 42 substations above flood levels to protect power during major storms and reduce the risk of widespread outages, installing more than 1,500 smart switching devices and, since 2016, upgrading more than 1,655 miles of aging gas mains to improve safety and reliability across New Jersey.
And we're seeing real results, with 37% fewer outages on 32 circuits upgraded with new overhead infrastructure, helping keep the lights on in more homes and businesses when severe weather strikes.
These improvements reflect lessons we learned from the storm. Earlier this year, our VP of Electric Operations, Paul Toscarelli, joined @EnergyCentral's Power Perspectives podcast to share how we're putting those lessons into action to improve reliability.

7 days away. 1 room in Brooklyn. Every DER conversation that matters right now.
We are pumped.
DERVOS is back on Nov 5, and the theme is urgent: "Everything is DER."
Things we can't wait to debate with y'all live:
Are data centers a grid crisis or a DER opportunity?
Why is everyone SolarMaxxing?
Who should be writing the rules for a grid this wide open?
Join us the Energy Central team as we'll be boots on the ground there next week with our friends from the @DER_Task_Force

$1 Billion.. with a capital B
That's what a large utility can spend over the course of a single major storm. And the meter starts running the moment crews are requested, even if they're hundreds of miles away.
So knowing a hurricane is coming isn't enough. You need to know what it will do to your grid, neighborhood by neighborhood, days in advance.
To learn more, Energy Central sat down with Pavel Grechanuk and Brandon Hertell, CCM of Technosylva to talk about:
- Outage and damage prediction at 2 km resolution
- Why weather forecasts alone don't predict grid impact
- How their model handled Hurricane Beryl, a storm stronger than anything it trained on

Your field crews know what’s happening on the grid.
Does your office?
Paper forms, re-keyed data, and “I’ll update it later” create a lag between what’s built and what your systems show. That gap costs time, money, and sometimes safety.
In collaboration with Esri, we dug into how utilities are closing the field-to-office gap, and what’s actually working.

Robot dogs are coming to America's power grid, and they're doing more than just looking futuristic.
At Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD), three robot dogs named Astro, Judy, and Elroy (The Jetsons, anyone?) are helping inspect substations, detect equipment problems, and prevent costly failures. With more than 270 substations and 400 large transformers to monitor, SMUD is exploring how robotics can improve grid reliability while keeping utility workers safe.
In this episode, SMUD's Director of Substation Telecommunications and Metering Assets, Eric Poff, explains how the utility is deploying these robots, why catching a faulty $2,000 component could save a $4 million transformer, and what it takes to turn an innovative pilot into a practical utility solution.
We also explore how robot dogs could eventually patrol substations for security and inspect hazardous hydroelectric infrastructure, all without replacing the humans who keep the grid running.

Passing the audit ≠ being secure.
Utility threats are moving faster than the rulebook. If your cyber strategy stops at compliance, attackers already know where to look.
Our PowerSession with @nozominetworks, "Beyond Compliance: Adapting to the Changing Utility Cybersecurity Landscape," is coming up next week (November 3)...reserve your spot now!
