The result could mark a major shift in Serbia’s relationship with Israel. Under Vučić, Serbia’s arms exports to Israel surged, while military cooperation with Israeli weapons manufacturer Elbit Systems expanded through major defence contracts and joint drone production. But the Student List has made its position on Palestine clear, pledging: “We will not be complicit in the systematic attempt to destroy the Palestinian people.” The Student List’s victory shows that people no longer accept the Israeli narrative. Crucially, Amnesty’s findings reveal a systemic institutional response to Palestine solidarity across the UK university sector, contributing to a “chilling effect” where people who speak up risk severe consequences. At a time when Israel is perpetrating genocide in Gaza, the suppression of pro-Palestine activism raises questions about the UK’s commitment to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and academic freedom. For three years, our national demonstrations have been smeared as “hate marches”.
