It took me just 50 years to write this book, about the real Europe, where you can be 'at home abroad'. Now in 24 languages. Here's the English paperback: amazon.co.uk/Homelands-Perso…

In her comments after the event, Le Pen has skimmed over the possible responsibilities of the hard left candidate Jean Luc Melenchon. She has no interest in attacking Melenchon as she knows she would beat him easily in a Round Two matchup. Her interest is served by pinning the blame on Macron and by ricochet the centrist candidates, such as the former PM, Edouard Philippe

Football is Europe. EU countries have won 5 of the last 6 World Cups, and every weekend morning millions of people around the continent play on public fields. Euro countries learn from each other in football every week, achieve excellence. It's a model for what Europe could be
Replying to @KuperSimon
Thank you, Simon. Football as an essential part of European culture (much informed by your own writing) opens my chapter on Cultural Europe....

Brilliant, thank you. Adam Michnik will always be a hero for his role with Solidarity and the Gazeta. I read his Letters from Prison in the late 1980s and they were (and are) magnificent. And still utterly relevant to the struggle to maintain civil society in Europe.

Superb, chilling interview with @Alice_Weidel by @zannymb …her reaction to mention of @MLP_officiel speaks volumes about her core German nationalism …
Refugees “have to go back to their country”, says @Alice_Weidel, the co-leader of the Alternative for Germany party. She explains to @zannymb why she thinks Afghan, Syrian and Ukrainian refugees should leave Germany. Watch the full Insider interview: bit.ly/3VDwGFc

"While we in the rest of Europe must prepare as best we can to defend ourselves against every kind of hybrid attack, the central thrust of our response should be to redouble our support for Ukraine", writes @fromTGA in the @guardian on October 10th 2026. #viewsfromthecouncil ecfr.eu/article/the-more-put…

Putin’s new doctrine is unfolding in Ukrainian homes and streets: more attacks on civilians, more lives destroyed. Seventeen people were killed in Zaporizhzhia today. Three of them children. Before dawn, russian guided bombs hit residential buildings. At least 18 people were injured. Rescuers are still searching the rubble. Families are still waiting for news. By lunchtime, a ballistic missile had hit a restaurant in Kyiv’s Obolon district. In broad daylight. Seven people were reported injured. Across Kyiv, power cuts brought the metro to a halt. Trams and trolleybuses stopped in several districts. Water supplies were disrupted as pumps lost power. In Kharkiv, a drone hit a hospital, injuring four people. In the Nikopol area, an 11-year-old boy was killed. A bedroom. A restaurant. A hospital. Places where people should be safe. These attacks fit the “new doctrine” President Zelenskyy says Ukrainian intelligence has uncovered: Putin widening attacks on civilian targets to frighten people into leaving their cities. As the UN Security Council met at Ukraine’s request to discuss attacks on civilians, russia kept killing them. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha put it plainly: “Russia cannot be allowed to use diplomacy as cover for continued terror.” I think of the parents who went to bed last night believing they would see their children in the morning. Of those now waiting beside the rubble. 🇪🇺🤝🇺🇦
