lol my lawn mower is only used 1x a week. Should I rent one from OpenAI instead? Also, who caused the DRAM shortage? It wasn't consumers...
sam: local inference is a terrible allocation of scarce resources “a lot of people want local inference, and somehow they assume that the problem is solved now because we have open-source models, we're going to be able to run them on our computers, and so we're not going to need all the stuff in the data centre but from a global allocation perspective, actually it's quite terrible to have everybody, like, have a bunch of the world's limited supply of DRAM sitting in their own computer and being used five percent of the time you want maximum utilisation in the cloud if you're trying to deal with this very supply-constrained environment somehow many people's intuition is the opposite of that”

Heads up if you use Terminal on a Mac: compromised certificate keys could let attackers impersonate websites. Apple has protected Safari, but tools like curl and git may still be exposed. I checked my Mac and it was exposed, so I applied Apple's fix: 1. Back up /etc/ssl/cert.pem. 2. Remove these two root certificates: emSign ECC Root CA - G3 and AAA Certificate Services. 3. Check that the updated certificate bundle is valid. This command does all three and preserves any existing backup: ``` ( set -e [ -e /etc/ssl/cert.pem.orig ] || sudo cp -p /etc/ssl/cert.pem /etc/ssl/cert.pem.orig t=$(mktemp) trap 'rm -f "$t"' EXIT awk '/^(===|###) /{skip=0} /^=== .*\/CN=(emSign ECC Root CA - G3|AAA Certificate Services)$/{skip=1} !skip' /etc/ssl/cert.pem > "$t" [ -s "$t" ] openssl crl2pkcs7 -nocrl -certfile "$t" > /dev/null sudo install -m 0644 -o root -g wheel "$t" /etc/ssl/cert.pem ) ``` Removing these root certificates can affect legitimate sites too. Recheck after macOS updates, which may replace this file.

Heads up, people, there's a free full usage reset on Claude that expires on October 22. My account shows the exact deadline as October 22, 2026 at 16:00 UTC. It's the usage-limit reset for Pro and Max plans that came with the Claude Opus 5.5 launch, so make sure to redeem it before then!!
