Dyslexia doesn’t define a child’s potential.
October may be over, but dyslexia awareness keeps going all year. IMSE instructor Sarah Walters wrote Kit’s Reading Adventure for children who wonder why reading seems easier for everyone else.
Who’s the Kit in your classroom? Tell us one thing they’re great at.

Reading is more than letters and sounds, and Sea of Sounds Speech Therapy & Learning Center in Brooklyn, New York is showing what happens when literacy and speech-language pathology work together.
Founder and Clinical Director Ms. Gigi, a speech-language pathologist, uses the OG+ curriculum as the foundation of every literacy program. Students begin with a comprehensive assessment and are grouped by instructional need, so each child receives explicit, systematic instruction at the right pace.
The results: first grade sound segmentation grew from 42% to 95%, and phonological awareness grew from 45% to 96%, between October 2025 and May 2026.
As Ms. Gigi shared: “Reading isn’t only a visual task. It relies on speech sound processing, language comprehension, vocabulary knowledge, morphology, and oral language skills.”

Every time a student who thought they couldn’t read does, the story changes.
IMSE’s Allison Caldwell shares how it happens: one teacher, one classroom, one student at a time, supported by coaching and systems aligned with the research.

Love them all, but especially the 😻🪁one!
Happy Halloween from IMSE!
Newton couldn’t decide on just one costume, so he tried on five phonics concepts: the Cat/Kite Rule, the SFLZ Rule, Schwa, Silent Letters, and Magic-E.
Our vote might go to Schwa. Nothing is more relaxed than the laziest vowel in a pair of flower sunglasses.

Critics have long argued against using Direct Instruction.
But an APM Reports review of available survey data shows that teachers who use it tend to like it. apmreports.org/story/2026/10…
Knowing a word’s definition is a start. Knowing its category, its synonyms, what it contrasts with, and how it connects to other words is how students really own it.
Our free Vocabulary Chart puts all of that on one page, ready for your next new word.

🧡 I need to make time to listen! Mt first experiences with "direct instruction" was decades ago working in a Special Education Center. We had the scripted books & everything-- different but similar to what I would learn later at Pitt getting my Masters in Reading Education!
