What happens when students meet the question before they meet the answer?💭 Learning objectives show students what they are expected to learn, and research suggests another option is worth a try: pre-questions, which ask students about the content before you teach it. Studies have linked pre-questions to students being more engaged as they search for the answers, and more aware of their own knowledge gaps. How you use them matters, though. Our latest blog shares three tips to help pre-questions work in your classroom, including how to choose the questions and how to support students who find them tough. Read the blog to find all three, 🔗Link in bio 'Teaching & Learning blogs' 🗨️How do you open your lessons? Tell us below.

Teaching assistants (TAs) make a real difference to students, especially students with SEND, and the way we use their time and skills shapes how far that goes. Research suggests the support that helps most depends on the task. A closed task, like solving a maths problem, calls for a different approach from an open task, like giving an opinion. That is one of four shifts in our latest blog on getting the most from your teaching assistants. Read the blog to find the other three, including the one most often overlooked. 🔗Link to full blog in bio How do you make time to plan with your TAs? Tell us below.

Teaching Assistants are essential in so many classrooms, with recent @TeacherTapp data showing that: 🔹43% of respondents would want to spend a budget increase on hiring more TAs 🔹69% of respondents thought more TA support would help them better meet the needs of SEND students

So, how do we bridge the gap between needs and availability of TAs? How do we ensure that the TAs you do have are deployed where need is most and impact will be highest?

What can a few seconds of your time mean to a student with ADHD or autism?💭 Dr Pippa Busch explains micro-interactions are the small moments in your day: a greeting at the door, a quick check-in in the corridor, a word of encouragement as you hand back work. They can be easy to overlook, but for some learners they may be what makes a classroom feel safe enough to learn in. Want to put these moments into practice? Our ADHD and autism course is part of the Teacher CPD Academy, alongside 30+ other topic areas. 🔗Link in bio under “Teacher CPD Academy”. Thank you for the detailed review!😊 We couldn’t agree more: if we only ask “does everyone understand?”, we rarely get the full picture. The real value is in finding out what students can actually do and remember.
A FABULOUS book from @MrGoodwin23 - thank you @Inner_Drive for this series. Such useful insights into finding out if they've actually learned what you have taught them. I spent many years in the dark and I wish I'd had this book for inspiration! itsalearningcurve.education/…

Is it ADHD? Autism? Both? You know the student, but you still can’t tell what’s behind what you’re seeing. It’s confusing for a reason. The two overlap, and they can co-occur. Training rarely covers it. Dr Pippa Busch explains what that looks like in a real classroom, in this clip from our flash webinar. Has this left you second-guessing? Tell us below.

You teach the reading strategies. You model them, practise them and revisit them. And still, two students in the same class get very different results. It’s not a reflection of your effort. Strategies only go so far without the background knowledge to apply them. The good news is there’s plenty you can do. Give students more context and background knowledge, and know that strategies alone can only take them so far.
