The AI race has a trust problem.🛡️⚔️ • A safety leader at OpenAI quit and wrote an essay in The Atlantic called "I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken". David Robinson spent about 3.5 years there and led the safety reports that come out with its big launches • His main complaint: OpenAI ships first, watches what breaks, then adds safeguards. He says that "guarantees periodic failures", and that they're getting bigger • His fix: run AI labs like nuclear plants or busy airports, with layers of backup and slow, careful planning, so one human mistake can't turn into a disaster • A real example: OpenAI's own AI agents broke into Hugging Face's systems (OpenAI disclosed it in July). Senator Josh Hawley is investigating, and senators from both parties want answers • Days before the essay, OpenAI confirmed it let three safety researchers go, saying they broke its rules on handling sensitive company information • OpenAI's side: it says it pauses training or holds back models when it needs to, and it's expanding outside testing and real-time monitoring. Separately, Sam Altman told Politico that society should accept some bad things from AI, because the good will be far bigger • We've heard this before: in 2024, safety leader Jan Leike quit, saying "safety culture and processes have taken a backseat to shiny products"

AI’s next chapter looks interactive.🖼️🛠️ • GPT-6 is rolling out in ChatGPT, and free users get it from today. Its new "Intelligent UI" can turn answers into charts, maps, forms and buttons you can tap, instead of a wall of text • Microsoft and Nvidia unveiled the RTX Spark chip. The new Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599 (shipping Oct 16), and a $5,999 Surface dev box can run AI models with 120 billion parameters right on your desk • Samsung just had the biggest quarter in its history: about 107.4 trillion won in operating profit (preliminary), the first time it has ever topped 100 trillion, as AI data centers snap up its memory chips • Google launched Playground: describe a game in plain words and AI builds it for you, no coding needed. Then play it in your browser, share it with friends, or climb the leaderboards • Not sure if that picture or video is real? Google's SynthID Detector is now free for everyone. Someone used AI to port it to the web, reportedly from Rockstar's leaked source code, and you could even play with friends. It was taken down within hours 📺 The Verge reported that Xbox had landed exclusive streaming rights to GTA 6, which would have let PC players stream it at launch. Xbox's strategy chief shut that down: GTA 6 will not stream exclusively, or to PC. Launch day, November 19, is PS5 and Xbox only ⛓️‍💥 A new PS5 jailbreak called Relapse works on the PS5 and PS5 Pro up to firmware 13.60, breaking in through the console's web browser. Sony pushed a security fix on October 1, and hacked consoles risk getting banned 🕹️ PS5 emulation on PC is moving fast: an emulator called KytyPS5 now runs Demon's Souls at 40 to 50 frames per second, up from 1 to 2 just three weeks ago (on a top-end PC with an RTX 5090) 😡 Sony is still taking heat for ending game discs from 2028. Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden calls it "a significant brand hit" and asks: if you don't own a thing, what are you buying?

More AI. Not enough power. 🪫⚡ • Google signed a 3.6 gigawatt power deal with Constellation, America's biggest nuclear plant operator. 890 megawatts of it is brand new power, squeezed out of 11 existing reactors by upgrading their turbines and controls (called an "uprate") • Google says that's like adding a big new reactor, years faster than building one. The twist: Constellation will use Google's Gemini AI to plan the upgrades. AI, helping to power AI • Microsoft brought 88 new data centers online in a year and plans to spend about $175 billion this financial year. It's also putting over $10 billion into the Gulf, just got a new data center approved in Sydney, and Bloomberg reports it wants 38 gigawatts by 2032 • The grid can't keep up: America's biggest power grid wants new data centers to bring their own power, or risk being cut off at peak times • Malaysia is in the race too: TNB has power deals for 59 data centre projects (8.3 gigawatts, mostly in Johor), and Microsoft runs a cloud region right here in Greater KL • For builders: computing power will stay pricey for a while, so pick smaller AI models when you can, cache what you can, and write efficient code. Tech’s changing and so’s your bill.💵🤑 • Free Gemini gets a downgrade. From Thursday, Oct 9, people without a paid plan only get the lightest model, Flash-Lite. AI Plus subscribers lose the top Pro model too, while AI Pro and Ultra keep everything • France's Mistral unveiled Mistral Large 4, nicknamed "Le Chonk": a 1 trillion parameter AI model trained on about 4,000 Nvidia GPUs. They promise to let anyone download it in about three weeks • Cheap phones are disappearing. AI data centers are buying up the memory chips phones need, so shipments of phones under $100 fell almost 60%, and phone prices across Asia Pacific are up 19% • Hollywood has a new giant. Paramount closed its $110 billion Warner Bros. deal, and the company is now called Skydance. HBO Max, Paramount+, CNN and CBS all belong to one company now • Setel launched Voice Fuelling in beta: at a Petronas station, just say your pump number in BM, English, Mandarin or Tamil, and fuelling starts
