Seattle Mariners ON Tap retweeted
He had one hit in the entire postseason.
One. In 15 at bats, across eight games. He had been on the bench most of October because he could not hit, and everybody involved knew it.
Tonight Tampa Bay was three outs from being swept out of the World Series, and they sent him up in the twelfth.
Ben Williamson singled. Tampa won it 4 to 3. Their season is still alive.
Milwaukee led that game 3 to 2 and leads the series three games to one. No team has ever come back from three games to none to win a World Series. Tampa is still trying. Game 5 is tomorrow in Tampa.
Here is the guy they handed it to.
He grew up in Chantilly, Virginia, and went to Freedom High School over in South Riding. He was conference and regional player of the year as a senior in 2019.
Then he went to William and Mary, which is not where you go to get drafted.
He was First Team All-CAA three straight years, the first player in the history of that school to do it. He was the defensive player of the year in the league in 2022. As a senior he hit .391 with 12 home runs and stole 14 bases and was the player of the year in the CAA.
Seattle took him 57th overall in 2023 and signed him under slot for 600,000 dollars.
The pattern showed up fast. He hit .315 at Everett, then got to Double-A and could not figure out the pitching, and the one thing nobody ever questioned was the glove.
He debuted on April 15, 2025, and singled in his first plate appearance.
Then here is the thing that has followed him ever since.
He was Seattle's starting third baseman that summer, and he led every third baseman in the American League in defensive runs saved, and he was near the bottom of the entire league in OPS.
Best hands at the position. Could not hit.
So on July 30 the Mariners went and got Eugenio Suarez, and Ben Williamson got sent down to Triple-A.
In February they traded him to Tampa.
This year he hit .238 with 3 home runs. In the last week of the season he hit .091.
Be straight about it. One single does not make him a hitter. He is a 25 year old defender who has never hit, the numbers are the numbers, and Tampa still needs to win three in a row against a team that won 10 to 1 two nights ago.
But think about what that at bat actually was.
A guy who was 1 for 15 in October. Twelfth inning. Season over if he makes an out. The whole dugout watching a man they had been sitting for two weeks.
Seattle sent him down because he could not hit.
Tonight Tampa Bay's entire season came down to whether he could hit.
He could.

BEN WILLIAMSON!! Yes, Mariners Ben Williamson, keeps the Rays season alive with a walk-off in the 12th inning comeback!
I wish the Mariners operated like the Seahawks.
So lucky to be a Seahawks fan... yet, so unlucky to be a Mariners fan.
The Mariners firing their assistant hitting coach in the middle of July, thinking it would do something.
They got worse after firing him 🤣
Happy Birthday Lázaro Montes 👀 Only 22 years old. Greatness is coming.
He also has the same birthday as Ichiro, good sign to me 🤣
Happy 53rd birthday to Mariners legend Ichiro Suzuki.
I swear he could still play today, he could bat .250 at least.
Does that say Mariners at 7?

I really hope the Mariners make the right choice at manager for once.
I don't know why we always have to be cheap or just make the wrong choices... for ONCE just get it right.
Mitch Garver has officially retired after 10 years in the game.
Best of luck Mitch in what comes next!
Would you be open to the Mariners getting Stephen Vogt as manager?
This is one I would not argue at all. One of the rare ones I would be happy with.
Anthony Castrovince says not to rule out Stephen Vogt going to the Seattle Mariners:
"It kills the guy to be away from his family... his family's out in Washington, so from that point, it makes all the sense in the world"

Oh how badly I wish last years Mariners season went like this.
I still can't believe we had a 2-0 & 3-2 lead in the series and didn't make it to our first World Series.
I feel like last year was suppose to be our dream year like it is for the Rays right now..
This is actually genius, safe to say every SODO restaurant should do this 🤣
At this point it feels like the Mariners are never making it.
Hit a hole-in-one. Free mattresses if the team wins. You went to an insurance company that specialized in calculating the odds. That was probably until 2006.
Then it moved to Las Vegas, where ticket brokers holding inventory for one team would bet against that team to hedge.
Then, by 2018, it moved to online sportsbooks.
Now it's happening on prediction markets.
An LA-based restaurant group put $60,000 on Kalshi before the NLCS that the Dodgers would lose to the Brewers.
Why? They calculated that a Dodgers World Series run would bring in an extra $120,000. No run, $0.
So they hedged. Guaranteed $60,000 either way.
The Dodgers lost. The $60,000 grossed $120,000.
Why an exchange and not a sportsbook?
At a sportsbook, your price is locked.
The only way out is a cash-out, and that number is set by the book's algorithm.
On an exchange, there's thousands of competing buyers on the other side. The price moves. It's a reflection of the market, and you can take it or leave it at any point.
The speculators who believed the Dodgers would win provided the liquidity the sportsbook never did.
Marketplaces like Kalshi are giving businesses the exchange that prize indemnity and sportsbooks never could.
Because the other side is real.
