Rural women are making remarkable strides in India's workforce, contributing to the nation's economic growth and development. According to the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), the Worker Population Ratio (WPR) for women aged 15 years and above increased from 23.7% in 2017-18 to 44.9% in 2025. The National Commission for Women (NCW), in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, successfully organised “Khel Shakti: National Consultation on Women in Sports – Governance, Safety and Policy Reforms” on 3 November 2026 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The consultation witnessed the participation of around 82 stakeholders, with representation from 16 sports federations and officials from the Sports Authority of India (SAI). The participants included Paralympians, recent gold medallists, former athletes, sports administrators, coaches, sports psychologists, fitness coaches, medical and sports science professionals, academicians, civil society representatives and other stakeholders from the sporting ecosystem. The deliberations focused on strengthening women’s participation, ensuring athlete welfare and advancing gender-responsive reforms in sports. The consultation was graced by Smt. Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs & Sports, Ms. Raksha Khadse emphasised the Government of India’s commitment to strengthening sports opportunities from the grassroots level, highlighting the objectives of the Khelo India budget in bridging existing gaps and achieving sporting excellence. She also underscored the importance of proper nutrition for female athletes, career counselling and greater awareness to empower women in sports.

The consultation focused on strengthening grassroots participation, ensuring a safe and dignified sporting environment, advancing women’s sports health, supporting career continuity, promoting equal opportunities and enhancing women’s leadership in sports governance. Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Smt. Raksha Khadse, joined the program as the Chief Guest. Smt. Vijaya Rahatkar, Hon’ble Chairperson, NCW, chaired the consultation. Eminent sportspersons, awardees, presidents of sports federations, government officials and representatives of various institutions participated in the deliberations to develop actionable policy recommendations for a more inclusive, safe and equitable sporting ecosystem for women in India.

राष्ट्रीय महिला आयोग ने NDTV द्वारा 1 नवंबर 2026 को प्रकाशित एक अत्यंत चिंताजनक मीडिया रिपोर्ट का स्वतः संज्ञान लिया है। रिपोर्ट के अनुसार, झारखंड के सरायकेला-खरसावां जिले के गम्हरिया पुलिस थाने में एक महिला के साथ कथित तौर पर यौन उत्पीड़न की घटना हुई। महिला घरेलू विवाद के संबंध में पुलिस सहायता मांगने थाने पहुंची थी, जहां 29 अक्टूबर 2026 की रात एक पुलिस कांस्टेबल द्वारा उसके साथ कथित तौर पर यौन उत्पीड़न किया गया। मामले में आरोपी कांस्टेबल सहित तीन पुलिसकर्मियों को गिरफ्तार किए जाने की सूचना है, जबकि थाना प्रभारी सहित कई पुलिसकर्मियों को निलंबित किया गया है। माननीय अध्यक्षा श्रीमती विजया रहाटकर ने झारखंड के पुलिस महानिदेशक (DGP) को पत्र लिखकर मामले की निष्पक्ष, पारदर्शी एवं समयबद्ध जांच सुनिश्चित करने, दोषियों के विरुद्ध सख्त कानूनी एवं अनुशासनात्मक कार्रवाई करने तथा संस्थागत स्तर पर हुई संभावित चूकों की गहन जांच करने को कहा है। आयोग ने पीड़िता को आवश्यक चिकित्सा सहायता, मनोवैज्ञानिक परामर्श एवं कानूनी सहायता उपलब्ध कराने तथा उसकी पहचान, गरिमा, निजता और सुरक्षा सुनिश्चित करने पर भी जोर दिया है। इसके अतिरिक्त, पुलिस थानों में सुरक्षा प्रोटोकॉल, निगरानी व्यवस्था और पुलिसकर्मियों के लैंगिक संवेदनशीलता प्रशिक्षण को सुदृढ़ करने की आवश्यकता पर बल दिया गया है। आयोग ने इस संबंध में सात दिनों के भीतर विस्तृत कार्रवाई प्रतिवेदन (ATR) प्रस्तुत करने को कहा है। पुलिस थाने महिलाओं के लिए सुरक्षा, संरक्षण और न्याय प्राप्त करने के सुरक्षित स्थान होने चाहिए। #suomotu #ncwindia #ncw @RanchiPIB @JharkhandPolice

The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognizance of a deeply disturbing media report published by India Today on 31 October 2026 regarding a brutal attack on a Class X girl student inside a school in Anantapur district, Andhra Pradesh. The minor was allegedly attacked with a chainsaw by a man who entered the school premises during school hours. Another student was also injured while attempting to intervene. The accused has reportedly been arrested. NCW Chairperson Smt. Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the Director General of Police (DGP), Andhra Pradesh, seeking a fair, impartial and time-bound investigation, strict legal action against the accused, and an inquiry into any security lapses at the institution. The Commission has also called for immediate medical treatment and psychological support for both injured students and stronger security measures in educational institutions to prevent such incidents. An Action Taken Report (ATR) has been sought within seven days. Schools must remain safe spaces for children.
