When severe winter weather strikes and the power goes out, staying warm and keeping the lights on can quickly introduce hidden hazards. Carbon monoxide (CO) is odorless and invisible, making prevention and proper equipment usage critical.

❄️ It's a snowy start to the day in Fairbanks! We've received around an inch of new snow so far today at our UAF office, with snow expected to continue before warmer air supports a changeover to rain this afternoon/evening. Pockets of freezing rain will also be possible. #akwx

Fall is a great time to prepare your home for winter weather emergencies! Winter storms can knock out power and keep you from traveling for days. Keep enough non-perishable food, water and medications for at least 3 days. Ensure you have warm clothing and blankets. Make sure you have an updated first aid kit. Charge your phone in advance and check for wireless emergency alerts. weather.gov

A slow moving front will produce a threat for heavy rainfall and severe weather from the southwest into the western High Plains through the weekend. The associated heavy rain will create mainly localized areas of flash flooding, with urban areas, roads, small streams, narrow canyons/gullies, and burn scars the most vulnerable. The hazards associated with these thunderstorms are frequent lightning, severe thunderstorm wind gusts, hail, and a few tornadoes. Keep up to date with the latest warnings at weather.gov.
