Crypto's Halloween nightmare: North Korean hackers strike again
On October 29, attackers drained about $6.3 billion from Binance's hot wallets. It's the largest theft crypto has ever seen, more than four times the $1.5 billion taken from Bybit last year. Two days later, the FBI named the same group behind both: North Korea's TraderTraitor.
And yet the market didn't break. Bitcoin dropped about 4% to a six-week low near $77,400, and futures saw $1.57 billion in liquidations. Analysts called it a leverage flush rather than an exodus: open interest barely moved, and the sell-off hit a market that was already cooling before the news.
The response is what stands out. Within hours, around $3 billion of the stolen funds were frozen on-chain, including more than $1.5 billion in USDT frozen by Tether. Within two days, the FBI had attributed the attack. Within three, Binance had replaced about 95% of the stolen assets from its own funds and started reopening withdrawals. On the first day, net outflows came to about 2.1% of the exchange's assets.
Compare that with 2014. When Mt. Gox lost around 850,000 BTC, the exchange collapsed and its creditors are still waiting to be paid. Twelve years later, the biggest hack in crypto history became an operational crisis, not a solvency one.
Does a hack this size still shake your trust in crypto, or does the recovery say more than the theft?
Fear is officially back. Total market capitalization fell to $2.61 trillion, down 2.37% over the past seven days.
Sentiment crossed the line we flagged last week: the Fear and Greed Index dropped from 43 to 36, moving out of neutral and into fear. BTC dominance barely moved, easing to 60.00% from 60.10%.
The Altcoin Season Index slipped again, from 50 to 46. Curve led the losers with a 22% drop, while Hyperliquid topped the gainers with an 11% rise. With dominance flat and both the index and total market cap falling, capital is still leaving the market rather than rotating inside it.
So last week's question got its answer: neutral sentiment tipped into fear before the market found a floor. The index is now 29 points from altseason territory. Is this the kind of fear that marks a bottom, or just the start of a longer cooldown?
Round 2 ends tonight, and this one is meant to be hard. Words #1 and #10 are riddles on the image. Words #6 and #8 stay hidden on purpose.
You have 24 hours to crack the full phrase. If nobody claims the wallet by Nov 1, 19:00 UTC, the community decides what happens next: we raffle the reward among everyone who took part, or we post the final two clues.

Gas is already inside. If anyone asks you to send funds to "unlock" it, that's not us.
On January 10, 2009, Hal Finney posted two words on Twitter: "Running bitcoin." He was one of the very first people to download the software and run it. Two days later, Satoshi sent him 10 BTC, the first Bitcoin transaction ever made.
Hal kept supporting Bitcoin for the rest of his life. Those two words are still one of the most quoted tweets in crypto.
What's the first crypto transaction you remember making?
In 2016, an attacker drained about 3.6 million ETH from The DAO. Ethereum rolled it back with a hard fork, and the chain that refused still runs today as Ethereum Classic. We told the full story, and other moments when crypto's code broke, on our Blog: bit.ly/4eBohIQ. Read it closely: one of the words is waiting for you inside.
Would you have voted for the rollback?
Round 2 starts now, and this time it's harder. The words won't sit in plain sight anymore: they're hidden inside the images and the stories, with their positions. And on Oct 31 at 19:00 UTC, the final key will arrive as riddles. The most attentive hunter wins.
Here's your first clue: two words are hiding in the image, and one is somewhere in the story below.
Two Guesses Left 🔒
A programmer owns 7,002 BTC locked on an encrypted drive. He forgot the password. The drive wipes itself after 10 wrong tries. He has used 8. Now he has no CUSHION for mistakes. One careless guess, and the fortune is gone for good.
What would you do with your last two tries?
Three days, eight words, one wallet still locked. Here are the final four.
Two of them are on the image. The other two are hiding in the lines below:
Tonight, 12 is the only NUMBER that matters.
Some fortunes GROW for years, others vanish in a single click.
All 12 words are now public. Put them in order, import the wallet and withdraw. First one in wins.

On May 22, 2010, a developer in Florida named Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 BTC for two Papa John's pizzas. Back then, the coins were worth about $41. Today, that dinner would cost over $800 million.
It was one of the first real purchases ever made with Bitcoin, and the crypto world still celebrates it every year as Bitcoin Pizza Day. Laszlo says he has no regrets: someone had to prove Bitcoin could actually buy something.
Would you have spent those 10,000 BTC on pizza?
That's 8 of 12. The final key for Reward Wallet #1 is ready and drops tonight at 19:00 UTC. Show us you're here: like, repost and tag a friend who's hunting with you 🔥
In 2013, a man threw away a hard drive with the keys to about 8,000 BTC. It's still buried under a landfill in Wales, and he's far from the only one who lost a fortune to a forgotten key.
Read now, word #5 is hidden in this article: bit.ly/4srK4Zl
The Squid Game rug
In 2021, the SQUID token went from cents to over $2,800 in days. Holders couldn't sell. The developers pulled about $3.3 million, and the price hit zero within minutes.
Have you ever bought a token you couldn't sell?
The Whale That Woke Up
Last month, a Bitcoin wallet silent for 14 years moved all 600 BTC, about $51 million. Its owner bought in when one coin cost less than a cup of coffee.
It made headlines BECAUSE (#7) wallets this old almost never move.
Would you have held for 14 years?
The Vampire Attack 🧛
In August 2020, SushiSwap copied Uniswap's code and offered liquidity providers a new token, SUSHI, for moving over. In September, it pulled their liquidity across in one migration. About $810 million moved in a single day, more than half of Uniswap's liquidity.
Nothing was stolen: providers chose to switch for the extra rewards. That's why DeFi calls it a vampire attack, not a hack. A week later, Uniswap answered with its own token, UNI.
Would you have switched for the extra yield?
The Haunted Wallets: a Halloween hunt 🎃
We've hidden 2 wallets with $100 inside each. Find the 12-word seed phrase, open the wallet in any crypto wallet, and the reward is yours. First one in wins.
Reward Wallet #1: $100 in BNB · Oct 26-28
Reward Wallet #2: $100 in SOL · Oct 29-31
How it works:
1. Every day we post clues with words from the phrase
2. Each word comes with its position, so you know where it goes
3. On the last day of each round, we drop the final 4 words at 19:00 UTC
4. Collect all 12, import the wallet, withdraw the reward
To join: follow @SimpleSwap_io.
These wallets exist only for this game. Never import a seed phrase you find online outside an official hunt like this 👻
Clues come only from @SimpleSwap_io. Gas is already inside each wallet, so you'll never need to send anything to claim the reward. Anyone else posting seed phrases is setting a trap.
A smaller week all around. Total market capitalization fell to $2.67 trillion, down 3.49% over the past seven days.
Sentiment kept cooling: the Fear and Greed Index slid from 51 to 43, still neutral but now closer to fear. BTC dominance held almost flat, easing to 60.10% from 60.30%.
The Altcoin Season Index dropped from 55 to 50. Starknet topped the losers for a second week in a row, shedding another 25% after last week's 43% drop. MemeCore led the gainers with a 32% rise. With dominance flat and the index falling, capital is leaving the market as a whole rather than moving between Bitcoin and altcoins.
Last week we asked whether this was a pause before the next rotation or the start of a Bitcoin-led stretch. So far it's neither: Bitcoin didn't pull ahead, and altcoins didn't rotate in. The index is now 25 points from altseason territory. Does the market find a floor around these levels, or does neutral sentiment tip into fear next?
