Women and girls continue to carry a disproportionate share of unpaid care and domestic work. Transforming this reality requires engaging men, fathers, families, and communities to challenge harmful gender norms and embrace care as a shared responsibility.

Letโs explore practical ways to promote positive fatherhood, equitable caregiving, and gender equality across African communities.

Community voices are leading the way.
Over the past two weeks, Sonke Gender Justice and the Wellcome Trust brought together residents, stakeholders and researchers in Diepkloof, Diepsloot, Tembisa and Eldorado Park to explore the links between gender-based violence (GBV) and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR).
Using Group Model Building workshops, participants identified the root causes of violence and barriers to SRHR, creating visual maps that highlight where meaningful change is needed most.
With focus group discussions starting soon, we're continuing to work alongside communities to generate evidence that can inform more effective, community-driven solutions.

How many more women must die before prevention becomes a national priority?
When it comes to gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), responding after women have been harmed is not enough. Prevention must be funded, institutions must be held accountable, and warning signs must trigger early intervention.
Sonke's Mpiwa Mangwiro-Tsanga calls for a coordinated, adequately funded national prevention system that acts on warning signs, strengthens accountability, and prevents violence before another life is lost.
Prevention must be more than a promise. It must be a national priority.

The fight against #GBV cannot succeed when the very institutions entrusted with protecting women and children are undermined by allegations of sexual violence, abuse of power and toxic masculinity.
Sonke's Co-Executive Director @Mashobane61 asks a difficult but necessary question in this op-ed: How can women trust the police to protect them when those within the system are themselves accused of abusing their power?
The answer cannot be silence or institutional protection.

While we are still seeking justice for the recent killings of about 9 women in SA, we are now faced with another case of gender-based violence. What happened at VLAMO Restaurant in Sandton, is a stark reminder of how quickly, entitlement, can turn a womanโs "NO" into a threat to her safety.
A man reportedly followed women into a bathroom after they rejected his advances and threatened to shoot them.ย
Sonke Gender Justice is calling for a swift criminal investigation, accountability, and stronger safety measures in hospitality spaces. No means NO and must be respected every time.ย
#EndGBV #StopFemicide
Sonke Gender Justice condemns the killings of five women in and around Kempton Park and calls for transparent, adequately resourced investigations, victim-centred support, community safety measures, and accountability for perpetrators. We cannot wait for another woman to be killed before we act.

Founded in Johannesburg in 2006, Sonke has been at the forefront of advancing gender justice, human rights and health equity for two decades โ through community mobilisation, advocacy, legal support, research and gender-transformative programming.
Our work has taken us from engaging men and boys in gender equality to partnering with communities, governments, civil society, donors and the private sector across Africa and beyond.
As we celebrate this milestone, we're grateful to everyone who has walked this journey with us. 20 years is more than a chance to reflect; it renews our commitment to feminist leadership, accountability, and creating a just, caring, and equal society.
20 years of action. Another world is possible.
