🌟 TEAM SPOTLIGHT: PIUS AJE ONAH: Past Olympiad Medalist.
From representing Nigeria at international Mathematics Olympiads to training the next generation of mathematical champions, Pius Aje Onah has come full circle!
Pius is a Co-founder and Olympiad Instructor at Special Maths Academy, bringing over a decade of experience in Olympiad training, mentoring and team leadership.
His remarkable achievements as a contestant include:
🥉 Bronze Medal – International Mathematical Olympiad, Kazakhstan (2010), becoming the first Nigerian to win an IMO bronze medal.
🥇 Gold Medal – Pan African Mathematics Olympiad, Côte d’Ivoire (2010).
🥈 Silver Medal – Pan African Mathematics Olympiad, South Africa (2009).
🏆 First Prize – Australian Mathematics Competition, Junior Division (2008), scoring 96%.
His academic journey is equally impressive:
🎓 Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics – University of Cambridge, UK, under a Commonwealth Partial Scholarship.
🎓 Master of Science – University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, under the ANSO Full Scholarship.
Beyond competing, Pius has continued to serve Nigeria's Olympiad community in various leadership capacities, including Deputy Team Leader at the IMO in 2015 and 2016, and Coordinator at the 33rd Pan African Mathematics Olympiad in Côte d’Ivoire in 2026.
With over a decade of experience, he now brings his knowledge and expertise to SMA, helping young mathematicians develop the skills and confidence to excel on the international stage.
And there's more to Pius than mathematics! In his free time, he enjoys drawing, painting, creating music, playing chess and reading manga. 🎨♟️🎶

Today, the Special Maths Academy (SMA) team was represented at the SDG Maths Competition in Abuja by Wakiliat Oyiza and Haliru Animoku, where we had the opportunity to interact with and encourage young girls to actively participate in mathematics competitions and STEM opportunities.
During her address, Wakiliat highlighted SMA's partnership with the National Mathematical Centre (NMC) in identifying, nurturing, and preparing talented students for prestigious international competitions such as:
🌍 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)
🌍 Pan African Mathematics Olympiad (PAMO)
🌍 European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO)
🌍 And other global STEM opportunities
She emphasized that the Special Maths Contest (SMC) serves as one of the major pathways through which students are identified and prepared for these opportunities, encouraging the girls not to be afraid of competition but to see it as a platform for growth, excellence, and global impact.
