Thanks @YCombinator for documenting @Starcloud_Inc1’s journey to launching the first @Nvidia H100 in space 🙏 Check it out below! 🎥🤓
Starcloud (@Starcloud_Inc1) recently made history by launching a satellite with an NVIDIA H100 into orbit — the first time a GPU that powerful has ever operated in space. It's the first step toward building AI data centers in orbit, powered by continuous sunlight and cooled by radiating heat into deep space. Their approach could one day rival the world's biggest data centers while using less energy, zero fresh water, and far lower emissions. YC's @aaron_epstein visited Starcloud's HQ, where co-founders @philipjohnston, @EzraFeilden, and @Adi_Oltean explained how they built a working prototype in just 15 months — and why big tech is racing to space for AI compute.

More money, more time and flying less will not make spaceflight safer or make us more effective at achieving our objectives. We are done defending the status quo. We are not going to compromise NASA’s effectiveness or capability trying to appease every constituency and, in the process, satisfy no one. We are here for the mission, focused on executing @POTUS’ national space policy, achieving the objectives entrusted to us and delivering the kind of world-changing headlines worthy of America’s space program.

Great chat about or plan to send the first spacecraft to another star! @FermiExplorer Thanks Anu!
78,000 years! That is how long it will take for a mission designed by the team at @FermiExplorer. But this isn't any ordinary mission. It is going out towards our first star, Alpha Centauri. So when Philip Johnston, founder of Fermi Explorer, announced this once in a lifetime mission, I HAD TO bring him on the show. The Fermi Explorer Mission has a goal of launching a minimum viable spacecraft to Alpha Centauri, the nearest star system, leaving in 3 years and arriving in around 80,000 years. Chapters 📌: A 78,000-year journey Fermi Explorer’s mission to Alpha Centauri The Fermi paradox and humanity’s future The Voyager inspiration Spacecraft design, power, and propulsion The Oberth effect, explained First Resonance (sponsor) Solar escape and Jupiter gravity assists The $10–15 million mission estimate Communicating from deep space Science, art, and messages from children The team and potential collaborators A community effort: how to get involved We are proud to partner with First Resonance, the sponsor of today's video. Check out @Starcloud_ @PhilipJohnston was tackling ALL the hard questions asked by the audience. Also LOVE his optimism Best fireside I’ve been to yet!
Tonight it’s @PhilipJohnston on stage with @katelin_cruse talking about radiators in space and more 🙌 @Starcloud_ @sevensevensix - what a run these last 3 years have been

Let's go! I am beyond excited to see this level of ambition coming up. We are entering our great ambitions era of the 21st century. @PhilipJohnston , excited to see where this goes!

It took me a while to realize that in Silicon Valley, “He’s good at fundraising” is often meant as an insult 😅

Also never thought I would find myself agreeing with this but now i do!
David Deutsch called mathematics “the dumb side of our brain”. I never understood it until now.

Next generation hardware companies will be built on a AI Native platforms: - Agentic CAD - Agentic physics sims - Bot driven procurement - rapid test loops. This is the way of the future. Engineers will still engineer but just WAYYY faster
The first step of any new startup should be to spend $100k on tokens to ruminate on the concept. New chips, new launch vehicles, new robots, etc etc all should have $100k tokens put into them as the very first step.

If one of the labs felt like spending a few trillion tokens ideating on novel launch concepts, the space industry would be very grateful 🙏🤓🙏
People should build more launch vehicles. There is an enormous sucking sound from the market that justifies many many efforts on this front. Orbital compute will be >one trillion $ per year capex spend by 2035. There will be more than one launch company serving this. It’s not too late to get in the game, now is the time to build launch! 💪
