To all who believed in our mission and supported it, thank you. It has been a distinct privilege to support UMass Basketball during a transformative era in college athletics.
While our role has come to a close, our commitment to this program remains steadfast. We will continue to support UMass Basketball with the same conviction and pride that have guided us from the beginning.

Interesting points, and a debate that should occur on each campus in order to make its own individual decisions. A university’s mission may not address running a multi-billion dollar sports industry. It also does not address running commercial dining and retail operations or hotel and conference hospitality or acting as hedge funds. The real question is: are these endeavors AND education mutually exclusive? Clearly, I believe, the answer is “no.”
Mike Tirico says colleges need to decide if they run college sports programs or professional sports teams:
"Should that person [athlete] be... going to classes and getting a degree the same way the students are?"

It’s so wild that Awful Announcing (which does great work but has very little in terms of resources) routinely breaks more consequential stories than ESPN. Fittingly, this particular story encapsulates why that is.

If the players aren’t worth more than coaches, then don’t pay them more.
You don’t even have to pay them at all.
But the market is telling us how much they’re worth.
All the complaining just looks like people upset with athletes being able to access their real value.
