We've got a mascot so special, he has his own national holiday! Happy National Bison Day to Boone! Bison have roamed Texas for thousands of years and they're actually known as America's largest land mammal. Today, we celebrate the history and contributions of these majestic animals that have been a part of Texas history for generations.

Last month, the GLO worked with the Gulf of America Alliance to remove the ACTA, a large recreational vessel off the coast in Galveston that had been abandoned since Hurricane Beryl in 2024. The operation was a huge success, and the ship was safely removed from the area. Thank you again to all of our partners who made this removal possible. The GLO will continue working to protect and preserve our Texas coastal communities!

Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., was hard at work today leading a briefing for the School Land Board. She's still firmly committed to the GLO's mission of improving public schools for our Texas schoolchildren.

Today, Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., encourages Texans to participate in Flag Placement Ceremonies at VLB Cemeteries across Texas to honor the brave men and women who served our nation this Veterans Day. Texans affected by the July storms and flooding may now be eligible for additional FEMA Individual Assistance. Residents in 20 approved counties can apply for help with housing, repairs, personal property losses, and other disaster-related expenses. Apply at disasterassistance.gov.

Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., addressed a crowded room of energy industry leaders at the 2026 University Lands Energy Forum in Odessa. As a member of the University Lands Advisory Board and Chairwoman of the Board for Lease of University Lands, she's laser-focused on building the future of Texas energy and generating revenue for our schoolchildren.

Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., recently celebrated $9.5 million in Disaster Recovery Reallocation Program funds for a wastewater collection system improvement project for the City of Prairie View. She joined Waller County officials for a check presentation, where she explained how this crucial investment will help the Prairie View community build stronger infrastructure, keep families healthy and safe, and be better prepared for future growth!

In September, Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., attended the Pearland Chamber of Commerce luncheon to share what the GLO is doing to improve the lives of all Texans. She was happy to speak to a packed room of community leaders to talk about the progress the GLO is making on our Texas Engine initiative in order to create a better, more sustainable Texas.

Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., recently joined local leaders to officially break ground on a new emergency shelter to help keep residents safe when hurricanes or other disasters strike. Today, Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., is happy to announce the @TexasVLB Veterans Housing Assistance Program’s top lenders and loan officers of 2026. In 2026, this vital program helped close to 1,000 Texas Veterans purchase a new home. Thanks to the Texas General Land Office, nine islands along the Texas-Mexico border are now under the purview of the State of Texas. This week, Commissioner Dawn Buckingham, M.D., announced that the GLO declared these lands in the Rio Grande, totaling roughly 66 acres, as territories that belong to Texas. Federal and state law enforcement can now gain access to these state-owned islands to prevent trespassing by the cartels and safeguard our border communities.

The City of Mission recently celebrated a ribbon cutting for the La Cuchilla Drainage Project, funded with nearly $1 million from the Texas General Land Office. “The Texas GLO is proud to partner with communities like @CityOfMissionTX to strengthen infrastructure and help protect families, homes, and businesses from the impacts of severe weather.
