Live Facial Recognition is changing the game when it comes to getting dangerous criminals off our streets. We’re investing in LFR and rolling it out across the country.

Facial recognition technology has been the biggest breakthrough for catching criminals since DNA matching, already helping police take thousands of dangerous criminals off our streets. The benefits are clear, so we must and will expand its use. But we must also ensure that its use is fair, safe and proportionate. That’s why we are introducing new laws to ensure the use of this technology is watertight, so the public can have confidence that these tools, which are vital to our safety, are used responsibly too.

A fair deal. Care workers who answered our call after the pandemic, working in the sector as they promised, will be able to settle on their existing five-year path. Those who have not fulfilled their visa conditions will not. They will be able to apply for a new 5-year visa to make the contribution they came here to make. They will then be able to apply for settlement again. No one will be punished for the sins of an exploitative employer. But settlement must also be linked to contribution.

This country welcomes those who seek a new and better life within it. But there is an expectation that they will play their part, contribute to their community and become a part of our national life. Settlement should not be automatic. It should be earned.

Anyone seeking settlement, regardless of when they arrived in the country, will first need to meet four non-negotiable conditions: ➡️ A spotless criminal record - up from the current threshold of a 12-month suspended sentence ➡️ English spoken to a high standard with an equivalent to A-Level English as a foreign language ➡️ No debt owed to the taxpayer ➡️ A record of sustained National Insurance contributions

Under the Earned Settlement model set out before Parliament today, the right to live in the UK permanently will no longer be granted automatically after five years. Instead, it will be earned. Under the reforms: ➡️The standard route to settlement will double from five to 10 years ➡️ People who enter illegally, including by small boat, face a wait of up to 30 years to settle ➡️ Care workers who meet the visa requirements will retain a five-year route ➡️ Higher earners on more than £50,000, skilled public service workers and refugees arriving on safe and legal routes will be able to settle in five years ➡️ Migrants who claim benefits face a 20-year wait for settlement ➡️ Migrants with a criminal record will be prevented from settling in the UK ➡️ Migrants will be required to meet A-level standard English to settle in the UK

Knife crime has fallen by 11% since July 2024. But there is more to do. The No Place for Knives campaign is putting a spotlight on the increased police action being taken in knife crime hotspots to protect young people at risk and make our streets safer.

Henry Nowak’s murder was a horrific and senseless crime. The launch of an independent review will seek answers to what more could have been done to prevent this tragedy.
Henry Nowak was just 18 years old, with his whole life ahead of him. His murder was a horrific and senseless crime, and my thoughts remain with his family and friends, who have endured unimaginable loss and heartbreak. The Nowak family have shown extraordinary courage and dignity in their pursuit of answers. Henry’s case has raised serious and legitimate questions about whether more could have been done to prevent this tragedy, and about the response of public authorities in its aftermath. An independent review will seek those answers. I am grateful to Alex Chalk for agreeing to lead this important work. He brings considerable experience and expertise, and I know he will conduct the review with the rigour, independence and seriousness that Henry’s case demands.

🚨 There's nothing low-level about antisocial behaviour. From today, Respect Orders will give police and councils stronger powers to tackle it. Courts can now ban adult offenders from related behaviour – like public drinking on a high street. We're making communities safer.

Persistent anti-social behaviour offenders can now face curfews or bans from town centres. New Respect Orders mean they could also be ordered to attend drug, alcohol or anger management programmes. Those who breach these orders could face up to two years in prison.

Unchecked, anti-social behaviour blights our communities. But it is not inevitable and I won't accept it. For too long, we have lacked the powers we need to deal with this problem properly. From today, that changes: authorities will be able to take tough action against these offenders. This delivers on a commitment we made to the British people in our manifesto. And, most importantly, those who make life a misery for others will now face the consequences of their actions.

Some chatter on social media would have you believe that crime is out of control. The facts tell a different story. As @frasernelson has shown in his Substack today: Violence is at its lowest level since the crime survey began in 1981. Robbery is at a record low. Crime, excluding fraud, is 78% down on its peak in 1995. And the stats show this Government is delivering on its promises too: Knife crime is down 11%. Knife murders are at their lowest level in 35 years. Thefts including phone snatching have fallen by 20% in the last year alone. But I know there is more that we must do, and we will: We’ve put more than 3,800 extra neighbourhood officers into roles, with named, contactable officers for every neighbourhood. We’re introducing the most significant reforms to policing in a generation. We are tackling rising rates of violence against women and girls through our landmark strategy. And we are tackling crimes like fraud, more prevalent in our increasingly online world, with £250 million directed to this challenge in our Fraud Strategy published this year.
