Picture a stadium on match day where the ticket scanners can be replaced while the game keeps playing. That is the idea behind how @Starknet is approaching quantum threats. Signatures work like the scanners at the gate & STARK proofs work like the officials on the pitch & because proofs are hash based they rest on a different foundation from the elliptic curve assumptions behind many signature schemes. With native account abstraction, every account is a smart contract that can adopt a new signature method with no network-wide upgrade, although each account has to make that move itself. The ground under the stadium is Ethereum, because as an L2 Starknet settles there and follows part of its cryptography & migration timeline, which is why an independent L1 is being explored and is not yet a finished product. @Starknet is preparing for quantum threats without claiming the work is done. Every transaction on Starknet leans on 2 separate protections, and they are built on different ground. ▸ Signatures are the lock on the door and decide who is allowed in ▸ @Starknet proofs are the audit of the whole building and confirm every move followed the rules STARK proofs are hash based, so they do not rest on the elliptic curve assumptions behind many signature schemes, which means the audit and the lock face quantum pressure in different ways. Native account abstraction turns every account into a programmable smart contract, so the lock can be swapped for a stronger one at the account level without waiting on a network-wide upgrade. Each account still has to make that swap itself, and that is the honest part of the story. Underneath it all, Starknet is an L2 that settles on Ethereum, so part of its security picture follows Ethereum’s cryptography and migration timeline. That is why Starknet is exploring an independent L1 to have more say over core security upgrades, and it is still an exploration and not a finished product.
