There's no shame in using existing design system primitives.
The shame is pretending every interface always needs to be reinvented from scratch.

User interfaces are not going away.
Yes, humans will use computers alongside agents. When working with agents, we will need the ability to audit what agents do in a human-readable way.
Yes, some interfaces (ex: dashboards, in-chat UI for ephemeral tasks, etc) will be generated. Most important interfaces will be intentionally designed. We will want both deterministic and non-deterministic interfaces in different situations. We're thinking a lot about the best ways to help designers shape non-deterministic systems at Figma.
Yes, new input modalities like voice, VR/AR and BCI will change the way we use computers and introduce lots of new interaction paradigms. This is all very exciting :)
Overall, the surface area of design will continue to grow much broader. Design is the new code and the key differentiator for software moving forward. Expect more and more energy to go into design / craft in the years ahead... it will be how you win or lose.
Eric is right about plenty of things, but the market will prove him wrong on this one...
"User interfaces are largely going to go away.
Because the agents speak English, or other languages. You can talk to them. You can say what you want. The UI can be generated.
So I can say, generate me a set of buttons that allows me to solve this problem, and it's generated for you."

Today’s websites are designed for humans, with carefully crafted UIs.
But we are probably moving towards UI-less web.
automated bot traffic has already surpassed human activity on the web. with AI agents, this number will explode.
In near future its very plausible that 90% or more of web traffic will be non-human.
Imagine a web with no websites. All your favorite apps are now just databases, queried for information by agents that zip around on your behest.
In a world primarily composed of bots, what happens to websites? Do agents learn to navigate them like a human? Do they go away entirely? 🤔

you need to hire more designers
you probably think you don't need to because of ai
but ai is the exact reason why you need to
great designers are difficult to hire though
so you probably won't hire more
but you really need to

Somewhere in your 20s or 30s you’ll get the opportunity to rebuild your life after a negative loop. It's very important that you see that journey through.
if you are looking out for an exceptional founding designer, no better person than deep for it! 🫡
some news. i'm changing career paths.
six plus years of building from zero. early design hire at a crypto unicorn. head of design at a defi lab that went from a hackathon project to hundreds of millions in tvl. led the design of exchanges and other technical products single-handedly from scratch. co-founded a design tool startup that reached 1.3m+ users with no marketing spend. co-founded a venture studio and exited through acquisition and more.
wore several hats at once across startups, studios and agencies. everywhere i went, the work shipped and the outcomes showed up.
200+ prototypes and projects shipped, still counting. 10+ teams joined as founding designer, setting the foundation and the alignment from zero and leading the work from the front. helped founders scale the business, revenue, company, creative and design operations behind it.
i'm still building my own ideas/things and i've loved every part of it. but i've come to the point in my life where my life and my self demand a different version of me. different creative challenges and more.
so i want to go all in and have a strong impact on one company. whether it's a more established startup or an earlier stage one.
i'm now actively looking for founding designer, design lead or creative director roles. 0→1 is where i do my best work. i'm excited to work collectively as a team on something worthwhile, and i feel i can add a lot of value.
earlier stage or more established, either works. no rush, no need. i'm optimising for growth, creative freedom and problems that are actually hard.
