Turning Point USA repeatedly platformed Russell Brand after he was formally charged with rape and sexual assault—hosting him at multiple events, including on college campuses. The same organization now claims roughly 3,500 high school chapters (Club America) in American public schools. Public schools should not host or partner with a group that gives a platform to someone facing those charges. Remove TPUSA/Club America chapters from public high schools.

The Affordability and Jobs Act sounds like your electric bill. Unbelievably, it's about making it nearly impossible for the next president to undo what Trump is doing to our public lands. PERMITS LOCKED IN. Once a federal permit is issued, a future admin can't pull it back unless it proves it in court. Unless an exception applies, period. If it can't, the company can sue the FedGov and be paid up to half of what it's already spent out of the U.S. Treasury. And if the next president approves fewer due to caution, companies can sue the FedGov for half to all of what they expected to spend building them. The yardstick will be the last 5 years, the Trump years. COURTS CAN'T STOP IT. The bulldozers keep going. If a judge finds a Fed agency broke the law on an environmental review, the only remedy is sending it back to fix its paperwork. No injunction, no canceling the permit. And you'd only have 150 days to sue instead of up to six years. MINING ON SACRED GROUND. The bill overturns the 2022 ruling that blocked the Rosemont mine in Arizona from dumping nearly 2 billion tons of waste rock on public land with various Indigenous nations' burial sites. Miners could claim as many waste dumps on public land as they "reasonably need," for $400 a year per five-acre site. TRIBES CUT OUT. Under this bill, agencies would not have to consult any Indigenous Tribes before approving projects that could harm sacred sites. WILDLIFE. States could apply to take over endangered species reviews from federal scientists. Fifty states, fifty budgets, and Earthjustice says no federal backstop if they fail. States often get a cut of timber and mining money from federal land. The review clock shrinks from 90 days to 60. WATER. The EPA would lose its power to veto wetlands permits, the power used to stop the Pebble Mine at Bristol Bay. (See my reply.) The Senate vote is expected Monday, Nov. 9. That's why it's so urgent to call your senators. The bill is bipartisan. If you want to know more about who drafted it, that's in my first reply. #DemsUnited 📷 westernpriorities. org

On this day in 1872, Susan B. Anthony broke the law and voted for the first time. This was illegal because women were not allowed to vote. She was arrested, charged with voting unlawfully, and fined $100 (which she never paid). Cheers to all who celebrated her legacy, and that of every person who fought for the right to vote, by casting ballots yesterday.

I have been holding my tongue about something that happened during the Ohio gubernatorial race. I refused to speak while the election was underway because I did not want my words mistaken for an attempt to influence anyone’s vote. But now that the election is over, I have something to say. For nearly twenty years, my ministry has taken me among the homeless, the abused, the exploited, and the forgotten. I have sat with victims of sexual violence and witnessed the lifelong wounds of childhood trauma. What Vivek Ramaswamy’s campaign did to Amy Acton was among the most morally repulsive things I have witnessed in American politics. They took a woman whose stepfather was indicted for raping her when she was twelve years old and featured her mother, from whom she had been estranged for nearly fifty years, in a political advertisement attacking her credibility. The advertisement challenged Acton’s account of her childhood without mentioning the sexual abuse allegations or the circumstances of that estrangement. When people expressed their horror, the campaign defended it. Imagine examining another person’s childhood suffering and fractured family relationships, then deciding those wounds might help win an election. Anyone who has worked with survivors of childhood sexual abuse understands the painful realities of denial, betrayal, shame, and estrangement. A child growing into a successful adult does not erase what happened. Nor does a parent’s denial make that suffering disappear. I find it equally disturbing that an elderly mother, whom Acton herself described as unwell, was brought into this spectacle. Whatever her own struggles or responsibility for the past, exploiting that fractured relationship was grotesque. To everyone who defended this, consider the message you sent to survivors. To the young woman whose family refuses to believe her. To the man who has carried the shame of childhood abuse for forty years. To the frightened child who has yet to tell anyone. What did you teach them about the value of their suffering? I am a priest. I believe in repentance, forgiveness, and redemption. But none of those things requires me to pretend that deliberate cruelty is anything less than a grave moral failure. Your political allegiance does not absolve you of moral responsibility. You do not get to set aside your conscience during an election and retrieve it afterward. If your loyalty requires you to defend the exploitation of a childhood sexual abuse survivor, your loyalty has become an idol. And if your conscience cannot recognize the wrong here, examine what political tribalism has done to it. This is not about Republicans or Democrats. We have a choice as a people: continue excusing cruelty from our preferred political camp, or summon the courage to condemn it wherever it appears. Amy Acton deserved better. Every survivor who watched this unfold deserved better. And God help us if we have reached the point where winning an election matters more than protecting the dignity of a wounded human being.

.@JamesTalarico: We didn’t win by alienating our neighbors, or by shaming our neighbors, or by ridiculing our neighbors. We embodied a new kind of politics. A politics rooted in a deep love — for our state, for our country, and for all of our neighbors. My faith teaches me that love is the strongest force in the universe. Love is not passive. Love is not neutral. Love is not weak. Love requires that we stand between the bullies and the bullied. Love requires that we look evil in the eye and not blink. Love can heal what’s broken in America.

This is an election-day reminder that election denial is a form of corruption and specifically an act of fraud. It means that individuals loyal to the leader have agreed to tell a lie to the American people about who won an election. They propagate that lie to their constituents, congregations, consumers, and their children until it becomes not just a party line but a credo.

So now we’re “secretly” attacking Iran? One man took this country to war without the consent of the American people. Now he’s secretly continuing that war while telling us, “We won” and “we haven’t been doing any fighting for months.” This is a world of absolute nonsense. No accountability. No honesty. No end in sight. Please, for the love of our democracy, get out and vote tomorrow. wsj.com/world/middle-east/u-… via @WSJ
