Every week we tick more off, until only thirteen remain. In the meantime, we’re running through the countries still in the running, in alphabetical order, so you can get to know each one. Next: Tajikistan 🇹🇯 Tucked into the heart of Central Asia, Tajikistan is a country shaped by mountains, with peaks covering around 93% of its land. In the east, the Pamirs, known as the “Roof of the World”, climb to Ismoil Somoni Peak at 7,495 metres, while the Pamir Highway, one of the highest international roads on Earth, winds over passes above 4,600 metres. Culture here is every bit as rich as the landscape: falak, the haunting folk songs of the Pamir region, echo through the valleys, and the silk and cotton fabrics of atlas and adras, now recognised by UNESCO, bring festivals and celebrations to life in bold colour. Next: Solomon Islands 🇸🇧 Scattered across the South Pacific, the Solomon Islands is a country of six major islands and nearly a thousand smaller ones, home to around seventy living languages. At its southern edge sits East Rennell, the world’s largest raised coral atoll, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose brackish lake shelters species found nowhere else. Culture here runs on shell, song and story: strings of handmade shell money, crafted on Malaita, are still exchanged at weddings and ceremonies, while panpipe orchestras have echoed across the islands for generations. Introducing Artist 407 | Mahaman Sani Housseyni Issa 🇳🇪 Mahaman Sani Housseyni Issa, known as MOG Media, is an animator, game developer, 3D artist and creative coder based in Niamey, Niger. Since 2016 he has led his own studio, MOGMedia Design, working across 2D and 3D animation, game development and a wider mission to champion digital creativity and video games across Africa, including interactive titles rooted in African culture and education, such as TOTEM: Légende Africaine. His proudest achievement is one built over several years: the MOG Pro Suite, described as the first professional digital creative software suite to come out of Sub-Saharan Africa, a full ecosystem of standalone tools he engineered from scratch, including Wuta FX and Zané Pro Animation Studio, the work of a self-driven creative coder and visual artist determined to give artists tools of their own. Next: Palau 🇵🇼 Palau is a Pacific paradise in the western reaches of Micronesia, best known for the Rock Islands Southern Lagoon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of more than 400 emerald, mushroom-shaped limestone islands floating in turquoise water, hiding marine lakes like Jellyfish Lake, where millions of golden jellyfish drift in the sun. A true conservation pioneer, it became the first country to ask every visitor to sign an eco-pledge on arrival, promising to tread lightly on its islands and ocean. Its culture runs just as deep, with traditional storyboards, carved and painted wooden beams telling the legends and histories of its people, still decorating the meeting houses known as bai.
