🚨 CFR | JESSICA JACKSON CHALLENGES BRANDON JOHNSON’S MAYORAL PETITIONS — ELECTION FRAUD OR FILING ERROR? According to NBC 5 political reporter Mary Ann Ahern, serious questions have been raised about Mayor Brandon Johnson’s nominating petitions, including allegations involving nearly 100 photocopied petition pages and five pages associated with Melissa Conyears-Ervin. Jessica Jackson’s challenge goes beyond whether Brandon Johnson has enough valid signatures to remain on the ballot. Her argument is that Johnson should be completely disqualified if petition misconduct is proven, even if he still has enough valid signatures. Why? Because Brandon Johnson is the sitting mayor of Chicago! “As the head goes, so goes the body.” Jackson argues that if a sitting mayor can get away with petition misconduct simply because he has enough remaining signatures, it raises serious questions about the integrity of the entire election process. She also described the allegations as unprecedented for an incumbent mayor and questioned what they mean for democracy in Chicago. BUT HERE’S WHERE ILLINOIS ELECTION LAW COMES IN! Under 10 ILCS 5/10-4, nominating petitions must comply with legal signature requirements. Photocopied signatures can be invalidated, and knowingly forged or falsified petition documents may constitute criminal election misconduct. There is an important distinction between submitting invalid petition sheets and intentionally committing election fraud. Illinois courts have also recognized that proven patterns of petition fraud or false swearing can justify invalidating all petition sheets submitted by a particular circulator. SO THE QUESTION ISN’T JUST WHETHER BRANDON JOHNSON HAS ENOUGH SIGNATURES. The question is whether the alleged irregularities were isolated filing errors or evidence of intentional misconduct serious enough to warrant broader disqualification. Johnson’s campaign has acknowledged that some photocopies may have been included but maintains that it has enough valid signatures. No finding that Johnson personally committed election fraud has been established. Meanwhile, former Illinois State Senator Rickey Hendon, associated with Willie Wilson’s camp, reportedly stated that he believes Brandon Johnson has only 5,000 valid signatures! That remains Hendon’s assessment, not an official determination by the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners. JESSICA JACKSON’S POSITION IS CLEAR: If serious petition misconduct is proven, having enough remaining valid signatures should not automatically shield a sitting mayor from consequences. The election authorities and courts must determine whether the evidence and Illinois law support disqualification. THIS IS BIGGER THAN SIGNATURES.
